I think you bring up a good point, there is a problem in the terminology we use.

I have been saying this for awhile, that "DARKPSY" as in the style typically referred to as this is NOT always DARK OR LIGHT/HAPPY. The same thing applies to Full-On, which can be VERY DARK and VERY LIGHT/HAPPY.

The style of the music is better defined as a combination of the note patterns, basslines, sound types (melody,glitch,ambiance,etc.). The terms "Dark" and "Light" really just refer to EMOTIONS within the music. But you can find music that fits just about any emotion in ANY kind of music.

I've listened to super fast glitchy "neuro-trance" and thought it sounded more lighthearted than a lot of melodic Full-On I listen to.

And then a lot of the Full-On I listen to (and the stuff I like the most) has really aggressive, hard, and sometimes DARK melodies and note structures. Often in my opinion DARKER (in theme and emotion) than most "DARKPSY" I've heard.

But I think when people refer to "DARKPSY" they are typically referring to the more glitchy, minimal, NOISE/SFX/SAMPLE based (rather than melody based), driving, continuous basslines we hear in more of the "night" driven PSYTRANCE; but honestly it has become a very encompassing term. And then naturally all these styles use different levels of each other's dominant styles; some "DARKPSY" has melody, most Full-On still uses ambiance and SFX noises in the background just not as prevalently.

But just because it's "DARKPSY" (as in possessing the note, sound, and stylistic qualities of this family of music) has little or no bearing on whether the music is actually DARK THEMED PSYTRANCE.

I guess the observation I would make is that it seems like the GOA Trance of old at some point split in two. I think that the stuff typically referred to as "DARKPSY" has more of the original GOA TRANCE sound in the basslines. But then I think that most of this stuff is A LOT LESS MELODIC than old Goa Trance. Goa Trance seemed to combine what eventually became the harsh driving basslines and timber sounds of "DARKPSY" and the euphoric uplifting melodies AND BUILUPS/BREAKDOWNS of Full-On. Over time, it seems like these emerged as separate styles. But I would say that in the past, you found more music that had qualities of both.

I wouldn't go on to say that either style is better, or "more psychedelic" (whatever that is supposed to mean since we all live in our own bubbles anyway), or "real trance." Instead, I would say that we have come upon an era where GOA/PSY Trance has become many genres in one. Hell, I didn't even mention PROG in this little rant; but that's ANOTHER whole branch of what was once GOA TRANCE.           http://www.soundcloud.com/djKAHN

But please, no cheese!

Btw, IMO true dark psy should be called deep alien quantum music.

Bring more psy style(dark, twisted), true psychedelic, no cheese please.

Looking forward, big respect to organizers!           --

2 days in the desert. Better bring your thermal 1sies. I see Gatto and Saturnia on the lineup sooooo why the dark/light bickering? Sounds like theres gonna be both.
Though the so cal night music tends to be pretty blitzkrieg when it comes to speed and it can be a little overwhelming at points, its a good cleanse before the rise of the sun. You can get some serious mind work done in those frequencies, HOWEVER.
I did seriously enjoy Menogs night set as a break from the norm of so cal night time music, he was definitely my favorite of the entire year. His style is a hard one to keep up a whole night set. Most others with similar styles get loopy and boring, but he has mastered that style of psy. i would love to here more PRODUCERS in america go for that sound as opposed to the blitzkrieg. I think we have that area covered and need to venture.

I think magellan makes a good point, I wish I saw menogs set but based on the latest album, I'm sure it was killer. I find the sets that stand out to me are the ones that are less blitzkrieg and more story oriented. I like alot of variety and for it to go somewhere..

and this lineup looks killer, wish I could be there guys its going to be one hell of a desert (or forest) stompathon!           .:.vaxination.:.

Intent

What emotions/idea are the artist trying to convey? This is the basis for calling a music dark. Cali night style...are you talking music like Bodhi 13:20's? I wouldnt call that dark..... I would use the term "tearing at the seams with synaethetic sounds"...but not dark

Dark.... Xylamanda, Xenomorph...Silent Horror

Night psy.... Bodhi... Fractal Cowboys...Digressio Traviatta (?)...

It's all 'bout the frequency

As the sun rises, the general consensus is a shift in the boundary-pushing, comfort-shrinking, unhinged tempo/rythym to a more relaxed, communicable, "groovy" state....but this is up to your shaman, aka, the party organizers....I kinda like keeping the frequency knob tuned to WTF... I learn more, in the long run, that way....but nothing like a perfectly timed frequency shift, often manifested as "morning moments"

The best events, outside of dark/light prog/not, are those planned and executed by like minds with like intentions... I know thats what made (makes ) esoteric gen so damn special, and other quality event organizers alike.... Mixed signals never get too strong

Aaah, wished it could have been in Desert but that reservation is totally worth it. And its closer to San Diego too.

Anyway, apart from some surprise party in February, this is going to be the first outdoors of 09. Cant freaking wait!           Discover.Vote.Share() - http://www.beamto.us
