Greetings,
gatUlish is an Architecture student in Sydney. For his Graduation project he’s exploring the terrain of trance music and the rave experience.
The investigation is based on the belief that Architecture and our understanding of the human/built environment can benefit by understanding the music, the ‘experience’ and the spatial setting it take place in.
The investigation outline is available online (http://members.lycos.co.uk/gatulish/).
If you can, please answer the following questions…
your help is most appreciated and very important.
gatUlish
Some questions:
How would you define trance music?
What makes a good track?
What makes a successful party/rave?
What’s the importance of the ‘trance’ experience (musical, spiritual, cultural etc’)?
Is it interconnected with other fields? (science, complexity, new age, politics, drugs etc’)?
How important are the visuals for the ‘trance’ experience?
What makes successful visuals?
Do you think the spatial setting can enhance/is important for the ‘trance’ experience? (how)
What makes a successful spatial setting for you?
How do you go about making a track/ designing an event?
What annotation/scoring system do you use when creating/designing music/visuals/spatial?
Do you think the idea of a place for trance music lovers/makers – a central node for the culture – is relevant?
If yes, where would you locate it in the urban fabric?
How would you envision such an environment?
Other:
Many many many thanks,
gatUlish

How would you define trance music?
Electronic 4/4 music.
What makes a good track?
Flow, innovation, groove, freshness, emotion.
What makes a successful party/rave?
Good crowd, good place, good music, good sound and deco.
Is it interconnected with other fields? (science, complexity, new age, politics, drugs etc')?
Ummm... Well it's sure connected with drugs. Some people think that trance is drug music. I think that drugs are an inseparable part of the scene (like lots of other things), but not the main idea of it. There are alot of examples about people who loved the music with all their heart, and sometime even got to a 'trance' condition - without the help of drugs.
What makes successful visuals?
Skilled deco artist
sorry for not answering all of them.

-How would you define trance music?
-What makes a good track?
depends on musical taste, and is highly variable, sometimes i'll go for slick minimal, otherwise i'll be expecting floaty melodies or loud guitars... i do want the music to go somewhere, building a little 12h story
-What makes a successful party/rave?
a combination of good music (relative to the audiance's taste), nice environment, friendly people, no serious incidents, no lasting technical failures, and all this at a reasonable price ?
-What’s the importance of the ‘trance’ experience (musical, spiritual, cultural etc’)?
this is a personal issue, for some it is, for some it isn't ... some people make trance a lifestyle, others just go there occasionally for an evening...
for me: enjoying life, respecting others and (attempting to) staying open to anything.
-Is it interconnected with other fields? (science, complexity, new age, politics, drugs etc’)?
everything has to evolve from something, so did trance, it has it's origin in several music genre's of which some go way back.
i don't see much politics related to parties, except maybe marketing by labels
drugs is everywhere and nowhere, if you want to find it somewhere, you'll find plenty, if you don't want to see it, you hardly notice it's there ... it's interconnected with every and no part of sociaty... i doubt there's more in trance than anywhere else.
-How important are the visuals for the ‘trance’ experience?
as in decoration and location, it's pretty important, when visitors have certain expectations you'll get grumpy faces when you don't live up to those...
-What makes successful visuals?
anything that creates the "wow" effect
-Do you think the spatial setting can enhance/is important for the ‘trance’ experience? (how)
what do you mean by spatial setting? location? in that case ofcourse! it's always nicer to look at the sun setting over a mountaintop than having a party in a military bunker
-What makes a successful spatial setting for you?
room to walk/breathe, accesability to toilets/drinks/exit, right amount of light in the right places for indoors, and knowing your not disturbing anyone is always nice
-What annotation/scoring system do you use when creating/designing music/visuals/spatial?
that would make it feel like a competition now wouldn't it?
-Do you think the idea of a place for trance music lovers/makers – a central node for the culture – is relevant?
i'm not a musician at all, but i do think most artist would imagine their sound outdoors
-How would you envision such an environment?
-Other: i like many many styles of locations, they all have their charms and downsides, from squats in big cities to clubs to beaches to forests to bunkers to hangars

--How would you define trance music?
Trance music helps me to find new parts of my mind. When i'm listening to trance music i'm flying into the universe in my mind. I'm exploring and trying to understand the state of my mind. I believe all true trance music fans will give you this answer.
--What makes a good track?
The good track makes the good musician. Only the best trance artists are famous all over the world.
--What makes a successful party/rave?
The best party i've ever been was in "INDIGO" sofia bg. why? Because of this reasons:
Astral Projection - the goa trance gods.
The bulgarian goa trance fans - the second best in the world.
The best deco in Bulgaria.
The crowd around me dancing and flying into the space.
--What’s the importance of the ‘trance’ experience (musical, spiritual, cultural etc’)?
The man must reach the next higher level of understanding with the world and self. This is what the man must develop. The one with the music is the way i like the most. Everybody can feel the "trance" expirience in many ways. Exploring self is not easy.
--Is it interconnected with other fields? (science, complexity, new age, politics, drugs etc’)?
I know it is connected with other fields. But what's not connected with other fields? Which one are connected with TRANCE? I just don't know.
--How important are the visuals for the ‘trance’ experience?
I know a lot of articles about LSD. This dangerious drug is the key to open the door to the pictures in the humans brain. Many of the trance pictures are very much alike the pictures which peple doped with LSD said they saw when they were doped. When someone is listening to trance this pictures are help device to travel in the mind.
--What makes successful visuals?
Well i don't know. When i see visuals i don't know exactly what is good at it. But i can say is it trance or not.
--Do you think the spatial setting can enhance/is important for the ‘trance’ experience? (how)
Of course the spatial setting can enhance and is important for the trance expirience. Where it is not important?
I can't give you an answer to the other questions sorry. Greetings from Bulgaria!

fellows, thank you so much for your help
to e.samuraia :
what made the deco in 'INDIGO' so mind blowing?
what is it that makes the bulgarian goa trance fans so boom to expierience the party with?
what makes visuals/deco 'trance'
to rik:
for me there is there something in trance music/parties that makes u open to things more than in other music/clubbing styles?
is it for U as well? what is it do you think?
what is it that creates the 'wow' effect? strange shapes? lots of colours? moving projections? things that push u from what the brain expect?
by 'spatial settings' i mean the outlay of the space, the decoration, the art instilations and to some extent the integration of visuals to create a 'place' where the now and here of the trance party takes place...
by annotation/scoring system I meant: how does the artist which is involved in the music/event production, is planning (loosley or not) the effects he wants - like musical notation system/track list/video clips list etc'.
why do you think, and I join you with the way you feel, that outdoor setting is the best for a party?
to Gilad,
what do you mean by groove and freshness?
these are, I find, so hard to dscribe...
what makes a good place? a good deco?
what are the skills of a good deco artist?
What brings on the 'pzazot lagabot'? the state of 'trance' that breaks away from the norms into the 'chaotic' of now and here?
looking forward to hear more from you...

>for me there is there something in trance music/parties that makes u open to things more than in other music/clubbing styles?
That would depend, if i compare open air events like boom, samothraki, sollipse and other open air events to whatever club events of the same size, i think it's obvious that i do think our festivals have a lot more value, it's more than just stomping your feet to beats for days and days. it's an experience, a meetingplace, something you carry with you. i find it harder or impossible to find this in club events.
If you look at belgium, we have a lot of indoor events, here the difference gets smaller, walls tend to have a not to positive influence on parties.
>what is it that creates the 'wow' effect? strange shapes? lots of colours? moving projections? things that push u from what the brain expect?
creating a whole concept, not just random pieces of decoration put in every possible place in the location. but a story, a "big picture"
Just like the dj sets, instead of randomly playing nice songs, it needs to build up to something, i think it would be very nice if deco did the same.
What materials/techniques are used is not the most important aspect, technology is nice, but not neccesary!! (there's really no need for lightshows, projections and lasers, good deco can achieve much nicer effets if used right)
>by 'spatial settings' i mean the outlay of the space, the decoration, the art instilations and to some extent the integration of visuals to create a 'place' where the now and here of the trance party takes place...
imho the most important thing about the space in a partyplace is that there's enough of it, so that you can move from one section to another without thinking "gosh, i have to go all the way over there"
(example: the chillout area at voov, the organisation decided to move it a lot closer to the main areas because people simply didn't visit it ... distance was about 1.5 footballfield-lenghts away from the man stage)
>by annotation/scoring system I meant: how does the artist which is involved in the music/event production, is planning (loosley or not) the effects he wants - like musical notation system/track list/video clips list etc'.
i hate giving scores sorry (blaim school)
>why do you think, and I join you with the way you feel, that outdoor setting is the best for a party?
space, air, light, earth, nature vs conrete, light shows, heat, humidity, toilets at .5$
