Greetings, gatUlish is an Architecture student in Sydney. For his Graduation project he’s exploring the terrain of trance music and the rave experience.

The investigation is based on the belief that Architecture and our understanding of the human/built environment can benefit by understanding the music, the ‘experience’ and the spatial setting it take place in.

The investigation outline is available online (http://members.lycos.co.uk/gatulish/).

If you can, please answer the following questions…

your help is most appreciated and very important.

Some questions:

How would you define trance music?

What makes a good track?

What makes a successful party/rave?

What’s the importance of the ‘trance’ experience (musical, spiritual, cultural etc’)?

Is it interconnected with other fields? (science, complexity, new age, politics, drugs etc’)?

How important are the visuals for the ‘trance’ experience?

What makes successful visuals?

Do you think the spatial setting can enhance/is important for the ‘trance’ experience? (how)

What makes a successful spatial setting for you?

How do you go about making a track/ designing an event?

What annotation/scoring system do you use when creating/designing music/visuals/spatial?

Do you think the idea of a place for trance music lovers/makers – a central node for the culture – is relevant?

If yes, where would you locate it in the urban fabric?

How would you envision such an environment?

Other:

Many many many thanks,

gatUlish

** please feel free to forward this e-mail to whoever you think might be interested to get involve…

1- a psychedelic experience, musical journey

2- firstly, they have to be psychedelic. very psychedelic. has to have a groovy bass to be danceable, a few breaks in the middle and a large break in the end, which ends in a explosion of sound (climax)

3- outdoor, nice and good-looking people, not too crowded but not too empty, good chillout, no drug shortage/quality problems, free water and free fruit, lots of sun but not too much heat, lots of trees and most important good music

4- well it varies a lot from person to person... for me it's incredibly important because it's an escape route from the real world... a place where i can go when i can and need

5- i think trance is interconnected with various fields. most important ones (not in any order): tribal culture, space and alien culture, drug culture, peace culture, science/technological culture and all kinds of psychedelic culture

6- Very important... i guess nowadays in most parties there isn't much of a visual part... i think in the future this will be corrected, little by little

7- Various psychedelic patterns (fractals, etc), alterned in logical and ilogical ways, envolving and evolving from each other, changing colours

8- it is important for me. the space for the psychedelic experience can be either completely dark, or a bright sunshine in a tree forest. it varies with the mood and the music

9- ability to connect to whatever i want, whenever i want (music, nature, people)

10- i'm working my way to be a dj. about making a track, i've thought of that, but i don't even have the dedication i should have to a dj, so can't think of that right now...

11- "psychedelia", danceability

12- don't know about that... maybe it's a good idea, maybe not, like snowflake said... i'm divided

13- if that place was to exist, i would place it the further away as possible to any city, in the interior of Portugal for example...

14- i don't know... it would be a great place to spend a few days for me, but not to live. but i know many people who would live in that place for all their lives....

good luck
Panzer

I think trance is too broad so I answer for GOA/Psytrance.

How would you define trance music? Electronic space music

What makes a good track? acid synths going mad but structured in a decent way

What makes a successful party/rave? the music and atmosphere

What’s the importance of the ‘trance’ experience (musical, spiritual, cultural etc’)? Spiritual

Is it interconnected with other fields? (science, complexity, new age, politics, drugs etc’)? complexity, psychedelica, drugs

How important are the visuals for the ‘trance’ experience? Very

What makes successful visuals? Psychedelic, loatsa colors

Do you think the spatial setting can enhance/is important for the ‘trance’ experience? (how) whatever fits the music or experience

What makes a successful spatial setting for you? if everything falls in place. Music, people, surrounding.

How do you go about making a track/ designing an event? Richness in sound and originality

What annotation/scoring system do you use when creating/designing music/visuals/spatial? the usual software stuff.

Do you think the idea of a place for trance music lovers/makers – a central node for the culture – is relevant? No...that doesn't fit the open, spontaneous and underground character

If yes, where would you locate it in the urban fabric? Nope...

How would you envision such an environment? I don't

How would you define trance music?
- Happy, emotional, some sort of a merry voyage.
What makes a good track?
- Good vibes, one that makes me happy and smile all day long.
What makes a successful party/rave?
- I'm not sure, haven't been to a party yet.
What’s the importance of the ‘trance’ experience (musical, spiritual, cultural etc’)?
Mostly spiritual and a 'free your body and mind' experience. Also musical, when it comes to losing control and just... explode.
Is it interconnected with other fields?
- Sure, it can be interconnected with anything u want it to connect with.
How important are the visuals for the ‘trance’ experience?
- in what manner? I think it can be visually attached to your head, such a lovely experience.
What makes successful visuals?
- Colourfulness, life, psychedelia.
Do you think the spatial setting can enhance/is important for the ‘trance’ experience?
- Yes, some space can help. I think when having a trance experience an individual should have some space to explore and to be free. Unusual environment (non routine) can also help (Psychedelia).
Do you think the idea of a place for trance music lovers/makers – a central node for the culture – is relevant?
-Yes, quite, if it doesn't get 'outdoors'. But on the other hand, it might end up commercialized and vulgar.
If yes, where would you locate it in the urban fabric?
- in suburbs or unknown places, in order to avoid unwelcome visitors.

Good luck.
