Hi to all!
I know that there are many ways to compose a song, but which one are yours?
I mean, what´s your way to begin writing a track!
...is it the bassline or making Samples with Sound Forge? ...what ever i´m only interested!
@all cheers from austria! |

I always start with the Kick & Bassline. I know alot of people say its not a good way to start as you then neglect the melody & it becomes less creative as a whole track, but for me personally (at least for the sort of Psy im into) I dont think a track is solid & great in the first place unless you have the solid Kick&bass down. Once you have that (after hours/days of tweaking) I usually find a good snare that fits with it (youd be surprised how much difference a snare can make on your track) then I will experiment with Synths & find a couple of Lead sounds that go nice with it. Then see how that runs on its own & I start to make a nice riff, the maybe a good PAD or some SoundFX. Then i have enough material to begin structuring my track, when to drop the track ect. Then maybe i will find a nice Hihat rythm to go in, and the rest will then just kinda be a spontaneous mix of where to put things and anything could happen - I just try & find what sounds good. I must admit im still quite new to this so by around 4minutes into the track I do get a bit lost as where to go, but putting in a good break in the middle is good as it alows you to bring the track to a more quite pace, then back into the tune which usually gives me more inspiration as where to go next (introducing a new sound or something) |

you just dont use creative bass then maybe
or you feel that all the track melody must be like the bassline?
i start with full loop of kick bass drums and couple of leads.. silent all this and start from the begining of te track with the first sound |

When I have an idea of what i want to do, then I do everything very quickly and all at the same time.
I make the section of the track where maximum sounds are playing at the same time, then stretch the loops and make the arrangement, transitions, breaks, etc. - The track is ready! =)
If I don't know what I want to do, but have some time, I make patches for synths, or make some short samples or melodies.
I used to start from kick + bass earlier, but now I usually adjust kick and bass sounds at the final stage of making the track. The track can sound completely different if different kick + bass sounds are used. It's fun to experiment with almost ready track, changing kick+bass and BPM dramatically

Lately I've been starting out by finding a kick I like, EQ it till it's perfect. Then add a sub bass, EQ it till it's just the way it should be and in harmony with the kick. Then I add some percussions, Hihats and small clicks.
Then I add more bass, EQ it and cut off the lowest part till it's perfect.
Then I add more percussions.
Then comes all the other stuff, in random order...

I think exactly the same, and when i listen to a track the first thing i pay attention to is the kick&bass.
So i begin with these two things and i build arrangement after...

i usually start with
kick
bass
snare or clap
perc
Hihats
noises or lil bits
then synths
then i go back and make a intro with pas or atmospheres , and efx
afterwards i go back adding motifs and sounds that only come up once or twice in the track
i then chek the track out and listen to it alot then i go back and do fills and swishes and the likes for the transitions, crash cymbals etc.. i then collect all my tracks and off it goes to nuendo which was cubase b4, i likes nuendo better
then i start panning followed by crossfadings, volume settings on tracks last
then i put a mastering plugin on my master track just to get an idea with a preset of how its gonna sound mastered, ok now i disactivate it...
I keep listening to track maken sure my parts don't repeat that it bores usually i wait 1 or 2 days for this
i practicly take a break, then come back do some more automations of parameters...
when im content i bounce all that and off to wavelab to do some critical final lil tweaks, master to my best abilities and boom burn that bitch go running to my car. radio etc test out and take notes i go back to studio do some more tweakings and burn 5 differnt mixes and test those then i keep the one that i felt was the best, and done show it to my girl and buddies for some feedback, i'll take that and go back and fix anything i felt was needed according to my close peoples feedback, but thats only if i felt they had a point, then i come up with my last 3 mixes
and of those i choose what sounds best, that my long ass fuck process but worth it...
best regards guys |
