ManMadeMan - Free To Listen

Sound Intension, 2007

1. Stop Watch
2. Let Yourself In
3. Wow Wow
4. Field Trip
5. The Path
6. Alien Psychic
7. Information Overload
8. We Are Not Alone
9. Airtime

ManMadeMan is a British duo comprised of Paul Baguley and Sonya Bailey, two veterans of the psytrance scene. I must admit I did not really follow the events linked with this project, but I have many pleasant memories connected with tracks that showed up here and there on various compilations. ManMadeMan productions created with other artists were not too bad either. After 4 full albums, the last of which was a collection of ManMadeMan's tracks put through a remix filter of such celebrities as Silicon Sound, Tristan, Hallucinogen or Eat Static, it's time for a fifth, quite specific one. Specific because this time, Paul and Sonya smiled at their fans, giving them a free album you can download from the Internet, more specifically from the duo's website, their Myspace page and from Ektoplazm.com. The musicians have shown more raw, dirtier sounds, different from the polite, plastic sounds you can come across when listening to psytrance. We start with an innocent intro called "Stop watch", and then move over to "Let yourself In", ideal for the first phaze of a trance party. Mutated progressive, "Wow Wow", continues what the previous track started, but in a stronger and more decided manner. "Field Trip" is a lazy track spiked with a great groove, and "The Path", the following track, causes shy associations with older productions of Praecox, or Bigwigs' early repertoire. "Alien Psychic" is a muscled trance weight-lifter, who might not blow you away with his performance, but has his grace nevertheless. "Information Overload" is the real Dirty Harry of this album. Corroded and creaky, from the very beginning it treats us with a broken percussion and a completely warped atmosphere. "We Are Not Alone" is possibly the most trancing of all the tracks. It's also the fastest of them all. Alive and well thought-out, it will cause wonders on the dancefloor if it's played on a good sound system at the right moment of a party. Paraphrasing the world of politics, you can tell a real album not by how it begins, but by how it ends. The last track, "Airtime", is a heavenly chillout piece nobody who enjoys a bit of peace and quiet will be ashamed of. Although "Free To Listen" might not be easy to accept at first, it pulls the listener more and more with each replay, bewitching him with its elegance designed for the occasion. This package from the Brits surprises us with its amusing rhythm, tarnished form and minimalist but rich and creative orchestrations, along with a smuggled in note of humor, though it may not be too obvious. Even if somebody does not enjoy the album, no loss - we got it all for free.
