Thank you for having it. I had fun. I got to meet some nice people. Some of the music played really twisted my mind. Some just had me dancing with joy. The very first song by Sedousa had me scared, but then I realized it was a theme that she had in mind to start off her set, and away she went after that short interlude! As I didn't know any of the DJs when the gathering started and the late start threw me off, it forced me to ask who each of you were. ManicSortOfBliss(Chris) played a set with many different kinds of music. I had never heard a DJ do that before. Kind of a planned chaos. It actually worked well for me as to how he did it. Later, when I had a chance to ask him about some of it, I was indeed able to indentify the track with the "Breaks". I am not sure if I've ever heard Breaks before, but Willy had once tried to tell me what it is when I'd asked him a few months ago. I had fun with the music Chris played. Mutki put a stop to that! Chris picked up the pace at the end of his set, but Mutki came on blazin' with both barrels. Wow, did he play something totally different. After I took pause and shifted gears, I really got to liking that very first track he played. It had this high shifting sound that went right into me. Very fast beats he played his whole set. Towards the middle of it, it was trancing me. Went along well with how I was feeling at the time. I thought he might be GorillaDust, but that was who came on next. More fast beats and really these two got me twisted. I'm not sure who played next. I had to leave when his set was over and didn't get a chance to introduce myself or see how the next DJ or gathering would continue. This was around 4:30. All of the DJs played music at times that I really enjoyed and had me getting some good stomping in when the beats went with me as they can. Please bare with me as I'm not so sure of the music as I've only heard it for a little longer than one year with the majority of it being the progressive kind of trance, tech and techhouse and I am not too sure of being able to identify them either. If I like what I hear, then that's what I go with. This has me liking many kinds and being at the mercy of the DJs. I think if I narrowed what I'd want to hear, then I'd have it easier, but I'm still learning what I like best and it is possible that I haven't even heard it yet! It amazes me just how many different kinds of psychedlic trance music there is and how each DJ plays or makes it and what they do with it and mix it. The fast and furious type of psytrance is the newer of the types for me. It was good for me to come out to this Mountain Vision gathering. I have learned much from the DJs, dancers, and gathering goers in my area, and now I had a chance to see how it is in other places. Iowa had been my only other place more than 600 miles from my house that I had traveled to until the Manifest gathering. As I have written elsewhere, if you want to hear this music played, and played this way, you must travel to it as you won't find it sitting at home where I live.
Brian is the guy who made the greenlight orbit machine. I really like this machine and have seen a version of it suspended from trees that really can add a spacy, flowing look to things. It was neat when it was in front of the DJ booth shining upwards while backed by a small mirror. The orbiting spots would shift with the bass on some tracks changing their little orbits in sync with the beat. I also had a chance to talk to GorillaDust. One of the last tracks he played had a few questions for me. A right nice guy as he was explaining he'd come from Oregon to play for us and I from sunny Southern California to hear him. I met Gypsy and Sedousa as I was talking to GorillaDust (Adrian) where we had converged by the beverage counter. Yep, they'd remembered me from the picture at the Gemini, but I was at a loss to remember when the picture was taken as I just happened to have been in the camera's view when it was snapped. I have now met all five people in the picture at places very far from where it was taken! We'll have to get us all together to take another picture if it ever happens that we're all in the same place again. A space in time, eh?
As chance would have it, my friend Joe won a door prize in the raffle. A Mutki EP, Magic Mother. He kindly made me a copy to take home. I think Mutki played the third track at the Manifest, but if so, he definitely modified it while we where dancing to it. The fifth song on the disc (Crossing Rolando's Fissure) is one I like, but I can't say if he played that one or not. I'll get around to playing the whole of it soon. I am really missing my stereo. Playing this music on a small portable radio just doesn't do it when I'm used to 300 watt mono blocks. Oh well. I thought the sound coming from the speakers at the gathering was good. It wasn't sounding very balanced at the beginning. Then Chris deduced that nodes were forming from the positioning of the speakers and moved them closer together. When I realized that he was going to move them closer together as compared to what I intuitively thought would be wider apart as the way to go, I was amazed at how much better it sounded. I was standing centered to the speakers just slightly back from the center of the room. I had noticed the left side as facing the DJ booth had sound missing in it, but this resolved itself when the speakers were repositioned. I held that spot most of the night. Not too close to the front, but in a nice spot. Almost like having headphones on. I tried some other spots too. I do the same thing when outdoors. I've only been indoors a few times. Last week was one of those times too. I suppose I am looking forward to warmer weather so that the gatherings can be held outside, though I do like the cool and cold weather best. 30º F was the temperature outside. That's lots colder than where I live gets, but apparently for the Denver area this is rather warm for late night in January as was the near 70º F earlier in the day. I happen to know this guy at the Weather Control Bureau and he said he'd help me out if I kicked him a little extra for the bribe this time around. The sound is lots different indoors. These last two weeks have found me indoors. Both venues somehow had the walls in such a way so as not to make standing waves and mess the sound up. That's what tripped me out about Chris telling me that the problem experienced at the beginning wasn't caused from reflected sound at all, but was caused by distructive interference as the sound was radiating right out of the speakers. Hence, moving them closer together fixed the problem.
We arrived early. I met a few people, including a different Chris. He was studying a Spanish textbook in the dim light of the chill area before anything was going on as the setting up was still in progress. He told me about a gathering held in Illinois under the ledge of a giant cave. I would really like to check this out sometime. Sounds awesome. I can't remember her name, but she was from Florida and I know that's a hot place weatherwise. Yep, cold is much better for me. This tripped this Chris out as I have to bring lots of shirts because the music makes me get very hot when I dance to it. Inefficient dancing technique is me as I don't know how to dance, but that doesn't stop me from stomping the floor trying to make it softer and generating ample heat in the process. Luckily I didn't get airborne as can happen sometimes, nor did I fall once.
I might be moving to Denver this year. I hope the Mountain Vision crew will have more gatherings. Joe went to a different one a few weeks ago put together by a different crew. This is sounding good to me as I have more events to attend with there being more than one crew throwing them. - - -

Thanx man!
GyPsy and I had a great time at Gemini last year!
Will you be at AUM this year? I think this will be our only trip out west this year.

Holy late review Batman!
Well...
I had a blast visiting Denver and jamming out with everyone. Thank you all for everything!
I was amazed at how many artists came out to help decorate and make the venue look very very cool. The altar centerpiece that E11even made was amazing. Good stuff.
The music was great all night long. I enjoyed everything that I heard. My favorite set of the night would have to be Gorilla Dust. I was stompin around like crazy!
I wasn't too big on the dubstep that night. It seemed a little out of place to have been squeezed in between two psytrance sets. It was a nice little break though.
Unfortunately I was unable to get a prime spot to place the projector and mix visuals on a screen behind the DJ's. The couple of hourse that I did get to VJ were fun and enjoyable but as soon as Mukti started I had to turn the projector off because it was shining right into his face. Once he finished, I tried to reset the projector but just wasn't feeling the positioning of it and decided to just enjoy the rest of the night.
I hope people enjoyed the video art while it lasted. Next time I'll come a little more prepared. I didn't know what the venue looked like so I was pretty much playing a guessing game.
Thank you Mountain Vision Psy for having me out! I had a great time meeting all sorts of cool people. See you all next time! Maybe some of you can come visit us out in the Phoenix desert later this year! |
