I need some help...

I am making my own XLR cables and as I saw here:
http://diy-central.com/HowToCreateYourOwnDIYCablesXLRTRSStudioCables.aspx
It says that the cable shield should be connected only at the male end.
Is that correct? why?           https://soundcloud.com/avivtech

I bought a crimping kit and I make a lot of my own cables, its cheaper and I can buy better quality parts and save money doing the hard part myself.

Not sure about the cable shield? Maybe it only needs to be connected at one end to avoid interference.

A balanced XLR cable that is going to be connected into mic I/O, must have both ends of the shield connected to the 3rd pin, otherwise it won't be a 48v phantom mic cable.

I have made my cables connected on both ends, although in some cases it might introduce unwated ground loops, that's where you would want to disconnect one end of the shield.

Continue making your own cables, lotsa fun to it

When you start having problems with ground loops (hum), you might want to try disconnecting that one end. You can though do it right from the start, if you know you won't be connecting microphones with that cable.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
