Making sounds Mono

This is a blindingly moronic question and the solution is probably a button click.

For some reason I can't work out how to make vsti's output in mono. If they are controlled by a notes in a midi lane they just produce their sound as stereo.

This is a problem for my basses which should all be mono. VSTI's don't always have the option to produce mono output.

hi tomos, if you don't use any pan settings different from 'center' and if you don't modulate the pan nor have any unisono or other stereo effects on your bass, it will be output as stereo with both channels fully equal. this is mono. so you won't have any problem. (an alternative is to route the vsti output to a mono group to 'force' it mono (i.e. mix both channels, left and right of your vsti), you can do this if the left and right channel of your vsti _differ_ because you used some (stereo) effects for example. but it usually is not very likely that you use chorus or reverb etc. on a _bass_)

all the best

another way to force to mono is right clicking the panner, selecting stereo combined panner and set both values to the <C>.

Thanks dtd,

That's what I thought I was doing, however my channel is centred and I seem to be getting more sound out of the left speaker than the right on my bass (and it sounds a bit um, chorusy) and I'm SURE my monitors are balanced correctly and not panned or the active amps unbalanced.

I thought about the force mono method too, I will give it a go and see if it makes a difference.

Do I just create a new mono group channel and use a send on the vsti to the group?

Waves S-Imager...that is a good tool for forcing sounds to mono..also useful to use this on your master to check for phase issues while you are mixing.

assuming youre gonna use a EQ or a Compressor on your VSTI channel, just use mono units.

spencer: i wouldn't use an extra plugin for such a simple task, it unnessecarily needs cpu cycles.

You could check that out with headphones. You can also look at your master volume meter in Cubase when soling the bass to see if it's panned either way. If it's not, the peaks of left and right channel will be equal in height.

you can add a mono Group channel and route the stereo channel into it..

Depends... I know at least with Waves plugins that if you use a mono plugin on a stereo channel, the right hand side gets passed through unaffected. Not good.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I've noticed that on some other effects too. Not impressive..

I've tried using E-motions suggestion - stereo combined on panner and <c>entralised. This works perfectly!!

Thanks to everyone for suggestions and help.

Case closed !
