Hi all,

So a lot of the reading and such on sound design I've came across has covered leads and traditional bass.

I'm curious on how I might begin to go about synthing some pads/bassy pads similar to the following examples, as I haven't came across really great examples in the banks I have to deconstruct.

"And the Day Turned to Night" by Shpongle has some great bassyish pad examples in the first 2 or 3 minutes.

"Around the World in a Tea Daze" has something similar in the first 30 seconds or so:

Any advice is most appreciated, also if anyone knows of good tutorials on this subject

I suppose the technical term for what I'm looking for might be a drone, and not a pad?

Anyone have any input to possibly steer me in the right direction? Thanks

a pad it works diferently than a drone usualy

a drone is an ambience usualy full of reverbation wich have low harmonical tone and plays normaly as a single note

a pad, is like a melody with a slow atack sintesis wich also have a high sustain and high decay or release pattern...

if you have a complex harmonical scale for a song... usualy the pad is the part that gives emotion and delivers feeling into the music and the pad should be fit into that same scale... the pad note code should guide you to create leads

for my experience as producer pad´s can be a way of starting to compose, you can written a pad that you enjoy, doesnt matter if it simple with a few notes, or if it have chourds (several notes playing togheter)

but definitly it can be a way of starting a music, its also pleasing when pads have a misc of drone turning also the sound organical, like a string sweel...

a good way of setting up pads, its to beggin to work with buss sends, you can create 3 or 4 buss chanells/send chanels with stereo delay setup, tipical chorus sound, and 2 types of reverb, a hall reverb... and bright reverb

then, you chose an instrument you enjoy... and try to play some notes, it will sound dry, but if you start sending sound into the buss chanels it will start imidiatly do grow... sounding bigger, more phat and with more deepneess

its essencial you also modelate the instrument, try to play with filters, LFO or even decay or release...

there are instruments/synths that with a single oscilator work well, but pads can become more rich if you archieve original textures, or sounds that are pleasant but not comon to ear...

there are many ways of doing it... there is not streight rules to create a pad

but you can always go search more information about it on

good luck

Thanks! That's really great info.
Any thoughts on doing some basic drones as well?

+ 1,44

also "Spectral averaging" and "spectral grainstreamer"

i'm intrested too in this pad making process

two things i deem essential for this very pourpose:
-envelopes: be sure the right attack/release ratio is on to obtain pads witch never fall down on next note

-reverbs: this brings life and deepness to the sound , in the beginning i was using shitloads of reverbs with long predelay and loong tail, it fucked up everithing
better a shorter but quality reverb (2-3 sec) instead of longer shitty ones           http://mystic-sound.com/releases/ioon-cosmic-downtempo-9314-oclock/

another thing you can do to improve your pads is to use an effects rack (if you are in ableton) and have three chains in it, each with an auto pan set to a different frequency. Then you get you pad panning around all crazy like, it makes it sound pretty neat imo.           --

Also use your stereo field to widen up the pads,it works like magic.
Put something in one speaker and something slightly different in other, instant bliss.           From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

You mean the bass pad? When I do one of those I use a saw wave on low octave and then harmonia or unison on it. Lfo on cutoff on a LP filter, then maybe add some distortion to taste, chorus, reverb and it should sound something like that
