A few days ago I sent back one of my KRK RP8 G2 monitors as it's tweeter didn't seem to work anymore.
So that leaves me with just one monitor left :-( , for a while.

Is it a good idea to continue making music with that one monitor or should I just use my headphones instead?

Headphones, and get monitors asap

There was that program that some people used that emulated the sound of monitors while using headphones....

I think this was it. You could give it a go I suppose, it is kind of expensive at the same time though. I've never used it, so I can't really give you a review of it.

i would spend the time doing "upkeep" or "prep-work" - updating your track starter template to your current workflow, organizing/renaming sample library, hunting for samples, even working on kick/bass presets (stuff that is mono anyways).

or just, i don't know, write melodies for a while. say 'fuck the stereo field!' and while youre at it, 'fuck quality production' and write a bunch in mono and on headphones - focus on melodies or musicality while you literally can't focus on tight sound design.           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

OH GOD that would require a lot of switching when working with panning sounds wouldnt it?
i'd say that you should get another monitor            http://soundcloud.com/li-fe

I said I like it dirty, not muddy.

You can write music with headphones, or even one monitor. When the second speakers arrives, you'll do the mixdown.
If you don;t find making music with headphones exciting enough, start choppiong up samples adn organising/labelling your sample library...its THE most important thing of general studio house keeping.

Obviously the best thing to do, is simply get outta the studio and drink some bars dry, score chicks, drugs...etc. or go for long walks in the forest with some good smoke...anything that will get your inspiration juices high, for when the monitor comes back.

hey djones it's up to you...you are definetly able to make really good mixes with one speaker/in mono.

a friend of mine produces music on crapy laptop speakers and his mixes are so well ballanced...that i almost regret that i spend 2000€ for my dynaudios 12a.

but for the hearing pleasure you should definetly get two speakers.           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

Mixing using only one speaker is a really good way to improve your EQ skills. Various bigshot producers recommend mixing most of the time in single-speaker mono then switching to stereo to work on the stereo image.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

agree when i start a track i don t even bother turning on both monitor these days.

it can be good to get a cleaner mix but theoricaly i guess with 2 speaker you get some phase problems... (with have 2 ears so i guess there is always some phase problems.. no idea about all that)

i started to use just one speaker just cause one sound better to get the kick bass right in my room, no wall at proximity ,better place , low end is a bit better.

When I'm at home I mostly produce with only one monitor because I mostly too lazy to switch on the second.Damn truth lol good to know that it is even a technique to improve EQ skills.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

LOL , sometimes i use one focal for the left and one adam for the right...first i mix to get the sound right with one of them, then i check on the other, then i check with both at same time...funny thing when you match the level by ears to get the bass on the center it sound exaclty like using a pair of the same monitors ,it really suprised me...a hybrid of focal and adam lol
