I consciously decided not to make money from music or sound-engeneering. When I earn something from that - that's ok, but
1) I don't want to depend on that
2) I want to hear only the sounds that i like to hear, not what I must hear
I want to keep my musical part of brain protected from audio-spam.

evrything that evryone said is not acceptable.
you all talk about making money in normal work its not what the topic stand for imo
maybe even that its work with eq and compressor but its still for someone else and not yourself and not your own music
the only real solution is to sell albums and preform to thousands of peaple but you better be good.. dont expect to make averege music and live of that |

There are other ways to make a living from music without having to sell albums and performing to thousands of people. Even if you're talented enough to be the next Simon Posford, if you try to rely on that alone you will have to be very very lucky not to be very very disappointed. And I think that less than 1% of people who write trance will ever be that lucky.
I make an ok living teaching music tech to schoolkids between the ages of 9 and 16 years old. I work part time and it keeps a roof over my head, food in my belly and my car on the road. It takes the pressure off my creativity to HAVE to do well enough to feed me.
And it's perfectly possible to make average music and live from it; bookings don't depend on quality (although it is a factor), they depend on how many people you can draw to the event, and that depends on marketing, not talent. Once you know how to make trance that people won't just laugh at, spending time developing an effective marketing presence is much more effective than spending time agonising over your art. Sad but true.

HAHA LOL thats some funny shit (naga) U sure made my day... but it could be a cruel world but in the end of the day is what u make of it, sure we all have bad days
but what matters is that we get right back up and keep pushing
(Colin) that what you doing is cool mate, its very similar to what im doing, and to be quite honest it makes me happier than having a couple drunk fucks talking shit all night while recording verses... I plan to get the program into more counties in my state, heck man im sure in the end it will pay-off for me and the kids... keeps doing it mate your knowledge is helping plant seeds into these kids head giving them ideas to be someone, and to dream for a better future I wish you the best mate, i've heard ya tracks n they are Mad Fresh but i didnt know you taught kids Cheers mate

Hello people!
I have been thinking for a long time about teaching kidz in music creation... i think i have some basic knowledge to do that and im willing to learn more all the time, and as i see it teaching is the best way to learn for me..
but i really dont know how to go about it, i certainly need a plan.. Im going to have a kid of my own soon and i love working with kidz, never had problems in communicating with them, maybe cause im such a kid my self
Colin and psyaudionamics i would love if you could give me some ideas to go about, things i should think about and so on.. i would really appreciate it
should i go to the municipality that i want to teach in or a school...
nice topic by the way!

different countries, different rules...
maybe you have to ask it to people living in the same country?

maybe too much pot LOL is all good i use to be a everyday smoker but it made me kinda lazy so i've put that down for a while, no the cd's get distributed to schools for free!!! thats right for FREE! i make money off the program, not the cd's the cd's help spread a positive message to kids in this case they're peers
so its not just about the money its half half, half money and the other half doing something for my community thats gonna make a change, it doesnt onnly pay me well, but it pays me off in a spiritual way which makes me wake up every morning fealing good about myself and has raised my selfesteem and in return i feel im gettin better at my music God works in mysterious ways, i been clean for quite a while, now if i can only stop smokin cigs yuck
Just takin things day by day...
each kid in the program pays 75 dollars a week, its kind of in a way a after school program so in some weird way its babysitting hehehe but dont feal like it cus they are learnin and having fun and doing something positive for they're peers but again the cd's after being finished are given away, i do get government help for this project so i do get to rub elbows with politics in which who knows ahead in time what they can do for my personal career
its all about positive vibes when people in high places notice what im doing they are more willin to take me serious and and more willing to connect me with other important people its a win in the end, i make money im happy i meet important powerful people
you tell me now whats a better way to come up
dam im all smilies, its gotta be that good...

you got to talk and make friendships, start with coming up with a plan in how ur program is going to help, i design aswell so i create a marketing plan, i aproach the schools introduce myself and i give em a brochure explaining my program
from there on you just keep on going to different schools showing em the program, from there on u gotta approach people in ur community a mayor or city commisioners, u gotta do lots of legwork at first but once the program picks up it pretty much does everything itself... getting it started is the hardest as you gotta keep knocken doors.... some will open others will get shut in ya face dont let it discourage you, pm me if u got any more questions and i'll try my best to help u out cheers n good luck, im glad to see someone who likes the idea, and to be honest with u mate, im really happy doing what im doing, im sure if u get there you'll come on here tellin me wow man this is just awesome, you'll feel like a million bucks its very rewarding, and the pay is good aswell, now thats what i call hittin to birds with one stone cheers |

I work for local government; me employer is the Music Service of the Education department of the county council of a county near where I live. I saw an ad in Computer Music magazine that said "Can you write a track in half an hour? You could be just who we're looking for!"; I wrote them a letter, filled in the applicaion form they sent me, went for an interview (had to give a short test lesson on the software of my choice to 4 schoolkids - I introduced them to Sony Acid and we had a rockin time for 10 minutes, they picked it up really quickly) and eventually got the job.
£22 per hour; can't be bad I teach about 8 or 9 hours a week which isn't quite enough though - yeah the hourly rate is great but my pay gets spread over the whole year so I still get paid during the holidays; means my actual monthly take-home just about keeps a roof over my head and pasta in my cupboard. But there's nothing quite like seeing a group of four 9-year olds bouncing up and down to a 160bpm hardcore track they've just written And they give me TOOOOOOYYYYYYSSSS!
So far:
Core 2 Duo laptop, 2GB RAM (just this September after a couple of years of asking; the 3rd laptop they've given me so far)
RME Multiface
M-Audio Nio
M-Audio Trigger Finger (piece of shit IMO)
Behringer Nano (broken at a gig oops... they offered me another and I turned it down)
Audio Buddy 2-channel preamp
Korg PadKontrol (THIS THING IS THE NUTS)
Evolution MK225C (old faithful, been to every gig with me for the past 6 years, still got the original box too)
Cubase SX2 (but they're too cheap to upgrade me)
Reason 3 (ditto)
Ableton Live 7
Magix Music Maker (great for making basic music videos)
about 17 different versions of eJay (what, you think I teach 9-year olds Cubase?)
