how many of you dj's make "edits" for dj'ing purposes? I love long mixes between songs, but most trance tunes dont allow for this. they are usually too complicated and they can sound crowded if there is too much going on. i was thinking that looping a segment and putting it at the end would be a perfect solution and would allow for long mixes between songs. anyone do this? what kind of experiences have you had with it?

pros? cons?

easiest way is a ponderated choice of the songs to mix.

i like to mix ~1 minute at least of both songs and most of times i experience too much crowdiness is because of high frequencies, but the high frequencies of the entering song can substitute the high freq of the ending song and it sounds good, just have to take care that cutting away the high freq of the ending song you don't affect too much the mid frequencies: otherwise mid frequencies without a little bit of the high freq (wich are also part of the mid freq sounds) sound like suffocated, not clear, like through a pillow.

or you might try during the mix to bounce from a song to the other with the problematic freqs, if you get to manage this, mixes sound great, but you really need to have the feel of the 4/4's and know well the songs you're playing

personally i like sometimes to play with the ritmical cycles of the songs to bounce from a song to the other, sometimes don't get what i expected but if i did respect the holy 4/4's (or 8/8's, or 16/16's, or 32/32's, and so on depending from ones ability to stay tuned on the song going out) it may sound maybe shocking, or weird but rarely lame.

i have a friend who can mix with the right 4/4's without prelistening the song !!!!! fuck damnīt..... how did you do that i asked him: he answered like it was the most natural thing in the world : i just know the songs man...
he just feels when he has to push play without even touching the earphones!!!
that's real psy!!!! respect!!

never tried adding loops of appropriate parts of songs at the end, but i want to try using a third cd player or whatever with an appropriate track to help the passing from a song to the other

imo if you get to stay fully tuned on outgoing song you can do everything

bye

i love mixes that blur the "line" between songs. i dont hear too many of them. i can usually clearly hear the beginning of one song and the end of another in the mix.

i was thinking..
load up the original song off the CD into cubase or an audio editing software to create the loop to add at the end or beggining of the song. and basicly make your own "edit" of the song to fit the mix better.

this would allow me to pre-equalize to avoid crowded frequencies (maybe not a good thing... kinda takes the fun out of dj'ing) and create longer mixes without having to loop live sound.

no one has tried pre editing tracks for a better mix and can tell me about it? good, bad?

It's also easy to make edits of songs that you just wouldn't otherise play out... if a track is fantastic exceptfor a really cheesy breakdown or a dodgy sample (anyone remember No Women Allowed?) you can snip it right out and the dancefloor won't miss a beat.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

s0ft..what kind of stuff are you trying to mix?? I found with the right track selection there isnt too much psy that can not be mixed smoothly.

I also like smooth mixes without obvious shift to next song but....
psy songs often have breaks and sudden changes that might hear like a sudden song change, i like them when they're well studied coz they bring energy, shake the situation, flip the trip:
(in the next exemples i'm not pretending everybody likes the artist or song: just an exemple to show you what i mean)
astral proj. :chaos
alien project&space cat (space jam): trancemega
sphongle: many of his songs on sphonglization

99% it's all about right choice of songs: for both sudden mixes and smooth ones, doesn't make difference

@soft: if you have to edit a song for every mix you're about to do 5 hours studio for 1 hour mixing: in this case i spend my time to compose my own sound for a live act: i'd rather use some self produced loops to help mix in a sort of 80%dj-20%live act

i also think like zafer.... man if youre going to be spending so much time just editing and pasting and making sure everything aligns..... why not learn how to mix and you wont be bothered any more           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

its not that i cant mix smooth, its just that i find short mixes a little less smooth. and i find it hard to find songs that allow for long mixes.

actually, i havnt even thought of that. its a good point, but 5 hours for editing that kind of mix? sounds a bit extreme to me. i write my own music, in fact, its my main focus. but it this was just an idea, i was just wundering what your guy's opinion was.          The IsraTrance MySpace Group:
