here's a quick try with the percussion

What can I do better / different to make it sound more dubby?

Im planning on adding more percussion ofc. But thats the "platform" to stand on.

I haven't heard the track but ain't you overthinking things? Let the flow drive you, no rules is the only rule man

i agree with nychro, dont think too much, just do it. and if you're not satisfied with the result, atleast you got something to improve and something to work with, instead of deleting it and think of something else, probably completely different, which probably will result in loss of inspiration and flow.

remember, if you're not satisfied with the first result, just improve it, you can make almost anything sound good in context with other things.

anyway, i think the sample was cool, you're definately on your way with the percussions.
work more on it, make some variations here and there, and put in more percussive sounds here and there, no 4 bar loops constatly running in the background, but small hits once in a while to make it shuffle a bit =)

In Cubase if you go to Quantize settings, there's a 'swing' setting you can mess with. That's where you can turn up the 'groove'           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

Man, you need way more sub on your bass, and less mids.
Also sidechain the kick to a bass compressor - it loses a lot of its "oomph".

how to make dub:

1) make 4 tracks on a tape deck

Bass

Drums (make sure to use a rim shot on the 2 and 4. no snares or claps!)

Leads/guitars

Everything Else

2) send each of them to a different channel on a mixer

3) create 2 sends,

Spring Reverb

Tape Delay (with a high feedback)

both should be at 100% wet. you could also make a 3rd or 4th send with flangers, phasers etc but you simply MUST use spring reverb and tape delay. its usually good to have the sends come back to channels on the mixing desk and not just the the send returns, because that way you can eq them and send them back out to each other. delay ---> reverb=profit.

4) play the track through while pulling the various faders up and down and twisting the send & eq knobs. Record this with another piece of tape.

thats how you do dub. you can replace "tape" with DAW and "mixing board" with "Midi controller"

but thats how to do it for real. That's how old Shpongle and Hallucinogen records were mixed as far as I can tell, except they played from a DAW into a mixing board then recorded the dub onto DAT.

Again: you make the WHOLE song first

then and only then you do a live performance at your mixer with your hands, and record it warts and all. The fun of this is that you can do it again and again till you get it right and every dub will be a little different.

enjoy!

out of the box mixing is the real fun man ! one could by a controller for this ... owning a ghetto analog rig is one of my dream to mix some dubs or other experimental stuff.
