i had a beyer headphone at home, the frequency range was 10 or 20 hertz to 25000 or something, i don t remember , i hate mixing with headphones but with good one you can hear things you ll never hear on your monitors,it helps for choosing the really killer kick or things like that.

I have the same problem as Surrender: i packed up my studio until i move to a new house I use a pair of AKG K240df headphones to make music in the meantime but when i play those tracks on speakers they sound completely different (read: really horrible). Maybe you can learn how to create a really fat sound on headphones, but i'm afraid you need a lot of time to learn how they translate to other soundsystems.

Would it be a good idea to use a speaker-simultator plugin on the main-bus while using headphones ?

Well, the bass you produce on headphones usually sound dramatically different on monitors....

Surrender, the best you can do is compose lots of stuff on headphones this week, and go back to them once your monitors are back! good luck!!

i don't like producing with headphones, the ears often 'close" themselves very soon..

Ive heard of an artist who killed a raver with a killah kick bass combination that was produced only with a cellphone earpiece

I don't think you can really rely on headphones for mixing bass..Its really hard to judge the levels as the ears get used to the sound quickly..Even producers that make music on headphones eventually do the final mixdown on good monitors..Its better to just write music with headphones and leave all the tweaking for the monitors..

That only happens if you put your headphones too loud. Because then your eardrum tightens to prevent damage and indeed you won't be able to judge the levels anymore. That's why you always have to mix down rather quietly.

You lose a lot of sub, but most nearfield monitors are just as unable to produce subbass... Apparently your monitors do produce some sub, so that's what makes the difference... You always need to test on monitors that have a decent sub, otherwise it might be muddy without you even knowing it is...

The bass and kick can't sound as big on even decent headphones as on loudspeakers because the elements are so much smaller (I mean the ones that vibrate to produce the sound) and because there's no room around you that would affect the sound. Most music sounds spacier and larger thru loudspeakers (let alone PA).

Having said that, IMO it's possible to make good basses & kicks with headphones. You have to know them well. If you are like me and you regularly listen to pro releases with them, you will learn to know them. Of course the last tests & tweaks should be done on decent monitors.

I wouldt do that .. Dont think that its advisable
You will always hear the defferents - Before and
after But at the same time its more then clear and
logical to understand that if you are working with
an 2000 $ headphones or more this distinction are
blurring , So all is open .. ! all dependent in what
you having there , Thats all .

Sorry to say, but I realy dont believe any producer, even the pro`s, can make a complete good sounding mix ONLY with headphones...even though it is quality headphones

Headphones are a powerfull tool for listening reference, ind deed you can sometime get a clearer impression of things like reverb, delays and details in the music, than on monitors...and it should definetly be a part of your mixing process!!..but in my oppinion they can never replace monitors...you cant "move away" from the sound, hear the mix from distance, and as u say...elements like kick and bass levels are extremely hard to jugde on headphones...

Anyway, if its the only way right now, at least, take the mix around to someone elses place, and try it out on some monitors...

I would not recomend taking the track directly from headphones to a PA..u could get a nasty surprice..

All the best!

so my studio is mostly dissasembled now (temporarily because of me moving to a new place) and i figured since i still have it here, but without the monitors lets try to work with the headphones.
the thing is, i cant seem to be to figure out how to recognize that my bass is "good" i opened tracks that i know how they sound on my monitors and they sound really weird in headphones..... i have a good paid of senheisers so i know thats not the issue....
how the hell does anyone work like this?
i cant tell anything thats going on there... it all sounds not loud enough and not bassy enough.
anything on top sounds great and im happy i can hear some nice imaging and stereo stuff. but bass...
just eludes me, even when i compare it to known refrences.
any suggestions?

It's about reference. If you listen to top quality mixes constantly on headphones, your ears learn this sound. Then you can turn around and turn out good mixes on headphones. The human ear is surprisingly adaptable.
