so my studio is mostly dissasembled now (temporarily because of me moving to a new place) and i figured since i still have it here, but without the monitors lets try to work with the headphones.
the thing is, i cant seem to be to figure out how to recognize that my bass is "good" i opened tracks that i know how they sound on my monitors and they sound really weird in headphones..... i have a good paid of senheisers so i know thats not the issue....
how the hell does anyone work like this?
i cant tell anything thats going on there... it all sounds not loud enough and not bassy enough.
anything on top sounds great and im happy i can hear some nice imaging and stereo stuff. but bass...
just eludes me, even when i compare it to known refrences.
any suggestions?

some trance producers use always headphone for mixing kick and bass ,it s like a rule for them, maybe you could try and you ll see later how it sounds on your monitors |

I don't think you can really rely on headphones for mixing bass..Its really hard to judge the levels as the ears get used to the sound quickly..Even producers that make music on headphones eventually do the final mixdown on good monitors..Its better to just write music with headphones and leave all the tweaking for the monitors..

Yeah... good luck dude. I worked in headphones for years and stuff would always sound terrible on good systems.
Lots of professional basslines that sound great on big systems often sound very different and not nearly as good in headphones... the mix sounds all wrong.
I don't know, I'm sure there's a huge variance among headphones and certain brands probably sound very different.

I dunno. I pretty used to produce predominantly on headphones till really really recently, and if you dj with the same headphones you mix with, I think you can gauge how stuff is supposed to sound if you use other tracks as referential. I would definitely suggest that if you have monitors, using them for the final mixing stage just to clear up some issues you might miss with the headphones, but for the sake of working, you shouldn't have that big of an issue. You just have to tune your ears a bit to working with them. But if you are only going to use your headphones for a week, you might not adjust to them before you have your speakers again. Perhaps reorganizing you sample library would be a more fruitful task than frustrating yourself? Thats one of the things I do when I really can't work on music.

Its very hard to control kickbass especially with headphones(Akg 141 studio).
Its easier for me to control high freqs of a kick,or hiss noise cause
all sounds huge into my head, but huge mid and low range is a mess.
I have Dynaudio bm6a but
I usually use my hifi in relative low volume for critical listenning

Yeah, I have some fancypants new pair of $200 headphones I was given as a gift... either the pioneers or technics, I forget which... terrible for producing. The difference in sound between the kick/bass out of my Event monitors vs. headphones is fucking heinous.
I'm not sure if it's becuase they are an overpriced ripoff, or if they are specifically designed for DJ'ing and therefore don't work well in the studio... that' wouldn't surprise me, they press against my ears so tightly they block out all exterior sound, so, maybe that's it.... anyway... I'm wondering how a pair of these would sound....

So... much... fucking... money just for a pair of headphones... I wish I could try these out....

Aah Gadi! Now you know why my bass samples SUCK What i do now is as soon as I make a bass sound i try it on my speakers and than my iPod. It helps me in determining how to play with the EQs.
I'm def. getting monitors, but until then...bass in earmuffs |

This makes the Waves' Spectral analyzer look like a fucking joke. It's made for analyzing radio waves.
Install it and do A/B with a chune you like.

you can't judge bass with headphones no matter how costy they are (unless you want to blow your ears). first because the human hear can only hear the bass at high volumes and second because to produce a powerful and good quality bass you need a big woofer, not something that fits your ear.
EDIT: plus when a woofer is too near to the ear the frequencys don't have enough space to be formed well. this is not a good scientific explanation but it's the best i can give. |

its all in the eyes (when the ears are'nt available) - spectrum analyzer should give you a rough picture, work with that. composing can be done on anything - just mix it down/eq properly later on when you got your monitors back up. |

Now i havent read the whole thread, but i am very experienced with making complete mixes on headphones....i took me a while to find a good pair that i can rely on, and im actually using a couple of cheap Behringer-HPS3000. i cant say much more than listen to this example to hear what i get out of it.

im actually pretty satisfied, its all about knowing your headphones, and a little crosscheking on a good soundsystem But dont work to long at a time, u get tired in your ears.

Aeon, I have a pair of Sennheiser 650s. They are absolutly magic. The bass is incredible and you can hear everything, all the mistakes and imperfections.
I don't exclusively mix using them but I am happy to flick between them and my monitors without too much sound difference.
Thoroughly recommended. I suggest you demo a pair. |
