I was wondering how you would go about creating a gapless album where the tracks flow together almost like one track that has been split up.

Have artists that have done this done it by joining the tracks together afterward or by writing one massive track and then splitting it up?

Have any of you experimented with starting the next track with the sounds from the end of the last track also? If so, how did it work?

i dont think writing a 75 minute long trance track is even possible unless you are working on a quadra linked octacore system with 64 bits 24gb ram and one hell of a cooling system. But its a nice idea.

as to the question,
it's more likely that all the tracks are seperate and then joined together for a CD.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Agreed! We're working on a split album with Facehead right now that is two tracks, each of which is around 30 minutes. =) Bouncing is the only way!           http://www.unwashedtomato.com

Bouncing is key. I already need to do this for my more CPU intensive tracks, not sure if my computer would handle the whole album even if bounced, too clogged from the internet even though its quite fast (hmmm, format...)

I like the idea of putting the last 16 bars or so at the beginning of the track. I think I will use that idea, I might consider doing a few track together though and doing 30 minute or so sections as Unwashed Tomato suggested.

Thanks for your help everyone! Oh and if anyone else has any weird ways they did it why not add them just for fun...

i have done this sort of album in my debut 'sattel battle - soundscool'
we had the tracks mastered and then mixed them together just few seconds of fade out on the fade in to keep the flow , and made the cue points in logical places for home listening. djs should have no problem with it as well. create super track shouldt be any problem as long its done on several projects and then mixed into one new mega project using processed layers. if that wasnt possible then real live would be hard to do with laptop and it isnt.

If you want to do this I'd recommend putting it together in a Wavelab montage. It makes it really easy to do long non-destructive crossfades and edits, and allows you to put CD track markers wherever you like. I think long crossfades and careful editing are vital if you want to make the album sound like one long track, and being clever with the keys of each track so they flow harmonically. Also you might want to consider whether it's worth making it in smaller sections that get mastered individually before assembly; assuming the album has a lot of variation on it to keep it interesting it I think would be very difficult to master one or two long tracks and get it sounding top all the way through.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

My ofrthcoming album is of this sort. I started out with making separate tracks, and then mixing them together. When delivering the material to mastering, the engineer told me he wanted to do the mxing of tracks himself. So, I gave him the separate tracks and told him to mix it similarly to how I did, and he mastered them, and then put them together. The results you will hear in a month or two           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

sweet waiting!

btw we did my album as colin suggested exacly , less thinking of harmonics rather then general flow (sometime bpm matters more sometimes not , sometines the intensity of the song and sometimes the scales / keys too yes)

about tracklist selection we did same with the upcoming album too , flowing usualy harmonic wise and more important general vibe.. not mixed tho , just seperate tracks this time
