take a portable recorder, record your blender while making yourself a milk shake (of course with black milk as you are going to make a dark track!)

take the noise, add random fx AND glitch. multiply to 50 channels and again add multiple random fx AND bitcrusher to make the channels sound different.

add lowfi drumloop with deep rolling 16th baseline.

finally and most important: adjust tempo to minimum insane 170 bpm to kill al remaining musicality... there you go

sorry mate, but i could not resist..

seriously: there is no recipe for a dark track, or any tracks.
tempo and build up can vary vastly and still create the same vibe. just listen to the music you like. try to listen to the elements that create the atmosphere you like and then start by recreating your favourite track.. learning by hearing and replicating is the way to go in the beginning.

Try getting a beat working... kbbbkbbbkbbbkbbb where k is kick and b is bass. Start changing and experimenting until you get the beat you want: you won't get it right in the beginning, but with TIME things will come together.

After having a beat to work on, get ONE GOOD (complete) VST AND ONLY ONE, and fiddle with that. Tweak in, twist it, move everything, tweak again non stop, learning the VST (and most synths, because they all have the same things, but they arrange them in different ways), and continue on tweaking. Remember in psy trance things aren't static, everything is moving. Don't look for a nice preset that sounds good and then make a nice melody or riff and leave it like that. Twist and tweak stuff (I can't say it enough) and record your tweaking.

During your journey you will figure out what everything means and what everything does, how to use effects, tricks, etc., but just remember, if you like it and you think it sounds good, then that's all that matters.

To make a track you need a bunch of elements, that you dispose and play in function with time. In other words, you have to build every second of it. If something doesn't sound good then probably it isn't, and you can't make it better in the end (and you will most likely never go back to change it because it sounds bad and you have lost interest), so make things sound good from the source and from the beginning.

------
To make dark psy trance I'd say you need to know about eq, filters, compressors, LFO's, reverbs and delay's, FM and analog syntetizing, resampling and sample editing, or well that's what I find in common with most of the tracks.

Dark psy trance is a very complex and skillful subgenre, and as klippel said, there is no recipe for making music. There are only guidelines           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Well, what artists do you like? I'm not saying copy them, but really sit down and analyze what they're doing. At least, that's what I've been doing. With mixed results.

It is strange, I have tried myself on dark, and it always seems to be too soft at the end, no matter what. Am I a softy or is my brain fried?           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

get your ass up while you feel 4∫∫ƒµ©k€∂ by life or something/someone else and put all that shit into a song.

no joke, best advice is already given. choose an artist you like and analyze his work. think what the one lacks and do better.... for innovative stuff think innovative

theres no recipe for any genre cause at the end there is no genre at all. music is ƒµ#*in music and it gives a sh!t about what you call it. start a track and enjoy how ppl will go crazy to find a word for what you´re doing. it´s the weak of ourselves trying to define what can not be defined..... at the end, theres no need for definition at least in music, imo to life at all.

but dont wanna hang off now on this, find yourself what you´re calling dark. think how you will get there and go for it. a "dark" track can be stupid noize out of few horror samples recorded from SAW 1-6, killlarrrggg bassline and few blippy dblue glitch tracks. anyways a "dark" track can also be very complex, deep, innovative, fascinating and does not deserve this description at the end. it´s up to you what you wanna do. imo you just write a track like you would do in any kinda genre. for specific sound questions there is a lot of youtube stuff, topics here on isratrance or triplag community, googles pretty coOl for that. so just go ahead and read about it if you´re looking for ways to get "dark" sounds, the content would explode this thread as you cant tell in one sentence how a track is written and how its sounds are made. but the question "how to write a "dark" track?" is simply..... hm.

i dont know any so called dark artists who call themselves like that. we´re always named by others and name others, not only with music.....

hope that kinda helped. cheers           FUCK GENRES, LOVE MUSIC!!!!

Well, dark psy doesn't have to be dark. Look at neurotrance. It can just be hard too, banin' beats with 'noise' coming from everywhere. I feel dark psy is like an invasion of sound. Some of it reminds me of like a swarm of leads attacking your subconscious.            E-KLIPSE Trance Productions

Forest trance is cool and has nothing to do with cemeteries. Can be quite happy too, in a mischievous DJ Baba Yaga way.
