My friend Adrian recently built a system, similar specs. He did a lot of research and the components that were picked were generally some of the best price/performance options out there. I think it ended up costing ~ $1900 USD. The processor was also readily OC'd to 3.2ghz (from 2.4!) which is a huge value ($300 processor running as fast as a $900 one).
The one thing I might advise against is the mobo, it had some obscure problem with the original case (Antec p150) and the case had to be returned. Once it was up and running the firewire didn't work (which was a value consideration as an internal firewire card is ~$50) with either his external audio interfaces. If DFI makes an Intel board for the Core 2 Duo I'd check that out.
