i have a concerning problem. I have owned a pair of mackie 624's for well over 4 years and i believe one is failing, i'm hoping you can help me out here.

basically the two monitors sound different, both in response and tone when i pan sounds or music. one monitor sounds very flat particularly in the high frequency range and a little in the mids. also when comparing the two monitors with percussion hits (same sample in each channel panned left and right, no fx added) the flat sounding monitor has this quick decay resulting in a flat frequency click. even with kickdrum samples it lacks the upper section, the same goes with synth sounds and even whole songs.

a few things i have tried is the making sure everything is equal on the back of the monitors, and i also switched the monitors around just to make sure it wasnt my ears or the rooms acoustics. the tonal difference simply switched sides so im convinced its the monitor.

basically i wanted to ask whether you have heard of anything like this before?

because most of the difference is in the mids and highs is it possible i need a tweeter replacement? if so anyone know where and who would be the best people to make these repairs. should i repair both or just the one thats sounding a little dead and clicky?

thanks in advance

You seem to have checked everything you need to . When you say flat I am presuming you actually mean dull. To me flat monitors are good!!!

Have you put your ear up close to the tweeters to listen to the output (volume not too high)?

Are the room calibration setting equal on both? You sound like someone who would have checked this first.... but just in case.

In 2-ways speakers the x-over frequency is usually around the mid so it will effect the mid as well if the tweeter goes. Hence for me it does sound like a tweeter issue. I personally don't see why you would need to replace both...but drivers do require running in to allow the suspension to reach full elasticity.

As for replacement. Mackie's website should point you were to go.           http://www.whatacunt.co.uk/
