Hi, i have a question.
Im currently using a laptop for music production, with this specs
amd athlon x2 64 1.73ghz, 2 gb ram, 120gb hdd, and sad but true using windows vista.
For audio interface, im using a zoom g9.2tt(guitar fx pedal with usb interface)
m-audio oxygen 8 midi controller
Using this software: Fl studio 6, cool edit pro 2, audition 2, guitar rig 2, reason 3.
Also own an ibook, really old actually 600mhz, 386mb ram, 30gb hdd, i use it only to record ideas on the fly while playing guitar, for some games, and school work.
Want to get another computer for better performance, while producing.
With this actual computer, works fine just in some things, actually this is a replacement for a laptop i used to have, that was stolen, with this specs amd sempron, 512 mb ram, win xp, and i would say it worked better, less crashes, etc.
Vista sucks.
So i was thinking about a desktop computer, with intel core 2 duo at 2 ghz or better, 2 or more gigs of ram, a big hdd, and win xp.
Or a macbook, and make use of bootcamp, to install win xp.(would also try to learn on mac software to use the mac side of it, i will be using it at school too)
And use the same production software i currently have, and the zoom g9.2tt as the audio interface, but if there is something better not that expensive let me know too.
Which one will give me a better performance?
is the macbook able to run vst in a live performance? this would be a cool thing to take it with the oxygen 8 to play live with a vst.
thanks for your attention! |

it depends on your financial situation, if it's good than definitely macbook pro will be the best choice. macbook pro has core2duo cpu 2gb ram etc. so the configuration is almost the same as you wrote by desktop pc. yeah desktop pc may be much cheaper but the biggest advantage by mac (at least for me) is Logic sequencer. I love logic, you are sometimes able to do much more work in the logic as for example in cubase at the same time.

Do you want to use this machine just for music or even for internet and stuff like that?cause a mac is way more save considered viruses etc in the net..
ok..you have to think about plugins..but you can get them...and i don`t think it`s a big benefit of a pc that you can get more crappy freeware plugins..the things you can get for mac are very good and enough..
so the new macbooks support 4gig ram and you can get it quite cheap from third party sellers..don`t buy the ram through apple its too expensive..
and yep logic is quite nice but i wouldn`t say you can get things done faster than in cubase..it`s just a matter of workflow..
so if you know a lot about pcs its maybe cheaper to get one..but if not you are more save with a mac..like with how good the components work together..
i don`t trust windows so i would never go back to a windows based system..honestly..
and desktop or laptop...it depends on what`s your plan...like if you wanna be able to carry it easy to different places..so i`m really satisfied with my edu version of cubase and the macbook 2.16ghz..it got enough performance for the next years in my opinion..
macbooks are able to run vsts live..
but i really don`t get the idea of running windows on a mac..
ok maybe just for really specific things like a special plugin you cannot get for mac but..
i actualy tried this to make some kicks and basslines with windows plugins..but at the moment i cannot figure out why firewire is not working with bootcamp..so i cannot use my interface with bootcamp..ok i just got a small daw version of windows..maybe there is no firewire driver..but when i figured that out i will post it here..
hope that helps a bid..just ask if you gotfurther questions..

Cool thanks for the answer,
Well i want to use windows still, because of fl studio, ive learn on it.
Logic looks cool i have it installed on the ibook, but honestly havent use it, besides i dont think this ibook would be able to support it.
Yes mobility would be great!
cool vst live, thats another point for the macbook
How is the performance of windows on a macbook?
i mean the main software im using right now is fl studio, will this one perform well?
Thanks for your answers!!! |

I would also defenately go for the macbook...at least if you consider to switch over to logic in the future

i switched to logic. First sequencer was cubase, but now i kicked all of the bad windows pc stuff and be very happy with my mac and especially with logic. Its very easy to switch and it works!!
I feel better playing a liveset with a mac. I saw so much pc?s on stage stopping music
You should think about to pay a little more and be happy a long time with the macbook !!!

desktop pc would be the cheapest, i'd guess 40%-50% more performance than an equivalent priced macbook.
what about a pc laptop? still much cheaper than a mac.

I heard macbooks run logic ok. I got a macbookpro after using pc for years and it takes some getting used to but it runs very stable and smooth. No more pulling my hair out because of glitching and crashes and reinstalling often. Did cost quite alot more than a pc.
