i have a toshiba laptop for about a year now and i can say only great things about it!

i use it on stage for djing and live and never and i repeat never had a crash or any other problem that could occur during my performance!

i use it with a terratec phase x24 firewire audio interface and despite the flimsy 4pin firewire connector that needs a little attention everything else is rock solid!

i had many drops of beer and water inside the keyboard in a live set and it didnt explode!
once it fell down the desk and it continue to function normally (not on stage, in my home)

last but i have to say that its that its allday in the inrternet downloading, browsing etc..
i play games with it (doom 3, prey etc.)
watching movies, edit photos in gimp, ripping dvds and practicaly doing everything 5 pcs would do
and i just take it on stage and it does what i say it to do with minimum maintenance like adware cleaning, spyware cleaning, and registry/hd defragment!

my suggestion is before getting a lap is to see what u need from it!
before the toshiba i was aiming on a sony vaio but the damn things are to overpriced and they cost almost another laptop to repair when broken! u can get the same quality and performance with another brand and much better aftersales support (at least in my experience n greece toshiba has the best service/support)
i cant say nothing bad about asus they seem pretty good!

macs are great but for now i didnt have to look in that direction cos pc laptops are giving me what i want with no problems(windows xp/vista tweaking though is important for optimum audio performance and stability something that macs dont need as far as i know)

I've been eying a Mac notebook as well for my live sets. Until the dual core processors came out Toshiba was the obvious choice for me for music. My last Toshiba laptop lasted 7 year with no major issues and just about everyone else I talked to who had them wore by them. Unfortunately when the dual core processors came out many of their computers developed problems with the audio dropping out when the fan turned on and off and last I heard Toshiba hasn't done anything to fix the problem (hardware related).

In Japan Sony Vaio's have a reputation of being "cool gadgets that break very easily". They are very expensive to repair (at least here) and the parts they use generally aren't the greatest. You're mostly paying for the Sony name and several computer salesmen I've talked have told me generally they have about two year of life in them if you are lucky. Of all of my friends who've had problems with their computers I've noticed that the majority of them have Sony Vaio's so I avoid them. One thing to possibly keep in mind though is that Sony has a lot more Vaoi models available in Japan than overseas, so possibly they only release their more stable models to the international market? I don't know.

The main reason I'm looking at a Mac is that since the dual cores came out, no PC manufacturer seems to be reliable anymore. I'm sure this will clear up in a couple years, but at the moment I don't feel like spending a mess of money on something that may or may not work. For production, PC is still my main choice, but for live sets, I'm starting to lean more and more towards Mac.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

So cytopia get the Mac with dual boot best choice for sure, Macs is a stable machine , they do crash as well but all the computers do time to time. But as an hardware point of view they are very solid and stable.
My best mate had 2 Sony Vaios in the last 4 years and the new one is running Vista and OSX with no problems at all. Very good machines the sony it is a bit pricey but is a good machine. But the MAC is better M8 go for it . And also if you decide to sell it they keep the price a lot more than the pcs. As a sound card get the mbox mini duo ( I think the name is this??) , motu or rme a bit expensive but you buy it once an lasts so in the long run you save a lot of time ,money and pain.
Cool this was my advice hope it helps.
Good luck M8

Cubase 4 will run on Vista, but only 32 bit for now, and you have to revert back to version 4.0.1 I'm pretty sure...Once Cubase 4 is up and running I don't think you should have any issues with any vst's. Though I would look into them each specifically just to make sure.           ~Airyck~

cytopia. let's put it this way:
1. from price perspective, a mac laptop is definetely the choice. for my surprise: If you compare part per part, you won't find anything cheaper from any brand name, if you find anything comapable ( since I don't know of ANY brand that ships Santa Rosa laptop ).

2. hardware aspect: you get a warranty, you can have a global one.

3. software:
3.1 OS: with mac laptop, you get both PC world, and Mac world, with PC laptop you only get PC.
3.2 Apps: IMHO, don't be tempted by the "amount of plugins", out of all the plugins in kvraudio.com MANY aren't worth the download. except few, really good plugins are not there anyways.
And GOOD plugins are nearly always avail. for Mac.
3.3. sequencers - check the seq. site for compatibility. maybe until you decide to buy, cubase will work on 64bit... who knows. next OSX is also fully 64 bit.

4. Peripherals: hm... the only ExpressCard enabled device I know of is the UAD DSPs external box (UAD-Xpander). but it rocks, since ExpressCard has ~2.5GHb/s of throughput. this is a lot ( 2.5 times more than PCMCIA )
And I'm sure MOTU won't let us wait long.
As to the rest ( non PCMCIA) - all the firewire 400/800 and USB2 peripherals are mac compatible.

Regards.

i use macbook.. the small one with the 13.3 screen..

you get alot for the money you pay for it.

the price is around 1500 US$+

i got 2.0 core 2 due cpu, 120GB sata hard drive, 1gb or ram. build in webcam and more.

VAIO with same spec would cost you around 2300-2500 euros..

if this laptop you look for is for live's etc..etc..
stay away from the vaios.. yes they are pretty, very nice disignd.. BUT they are very very gental. and they brake easly..

the new macs as been told here beffor, based on intel cpu. so u run windows noramly and enjoy both of the worlds.

i have on my mac osx & win xp. both work very stable and i didnt see anyproblems yet.

for live preformans the osx would be much better than any windows. much more stable.

btw the battry with the osx last much more time than with the windows..

i dont know how to expalin it i gusse the osx is just better system than the windows and it takes less power from the battry..

cuz when i run the windows on my mac the battry lasts for about 2-2.5 hrs...
and with the osx i can wach dvd for about 4.5-5 hrs.. and also the wireless reseption is much stronger with the osx than with the windows.

so in the end, in one laptop, you can run cubase with all the plugins u love thats only for pc... and also logic audio...

cant ask for more maybe only for a macbook pro
good luck           www.myspace.com/vibetribestudio

1-ly: this is illegal
2dly: it works with only a limited variety of chipsets.
