yo,
since logic 6 will be only on mac and so on, I'd rather swtich to mac instead of switching to nuendo and stay with my PC.
I just wanted to ask you if that's a good idea - because mac is not so cheap and also I know nothing about mac - which will make me learn new stuff again and take time from music. OSX and all that shit.
- which VSTs allready work as AUs?
- will my delta66 connect to the mac?
- does mac got builtin midi i/o (aka playport)?
- I'm used to WaveLab also - will Peak do the job?
- how do u manage a onebutton mouse?
all that and more I don't remember atm.

Yo,
mac it's a good thing, not so expancive for second-hand ,
the prices for used G3 can be between 2500 to 3500nis,
G4's price range in about 4000 to 5500nis.
- almost all VST's have mac versions
- delta66 PCI can run on mac
http://m-audio.com/products/m-audio/delta66.php
- old macs come with 2 serial (9pin) ports and scsi port ,
the new ones come with usb & firewire ports , so if u
have usb midi interface, just install the drivers, setup
the oms for connected devices, and it's ready to go.
- Peak it's a great software that supports vst , tdm and
premiere plugins easy.
check out www.apple.com for new stuff
and also www.apple-history.com for G3's and older ones.
Peace. |

Today a new Dual 867MHz G4 cost $1700 and Dual 1GHz
cost $2500 , so maybe u mean the 17inch 1GHz platinum
laptop that come out just last week and it's about $3500.
Actually even the cheapest new mac that's only $1000
can work with audio better than any todays pc ,
and it's not because of pentium or amd , it's because
microsoft making operating systems that never use all the
power out of the cpu, just like a human brain that uses
only 2% out of what it have .
The difference is that mac OS designed much better for
mac hardware, that's why it works faster and stable .
Peace.

Actually I wouldn't agree 100% with all that is written here...
Firstly because the huge differences that were between the mac and the pc in the past are much smaller today.. The differences in the past were due to two major differences ( imo ) ---> 1.. was the motorolla processor unit of the mac that anytime would beat to death our own pentium processor 2.. the operating system of macintosh was much besser than the one our beloved Bill would spare us.. Since then some changes did take place ----> Bill learned a little and advanced the system to windows xp, quite solid platform that can stand in one with the os that apple brings with the mac ( to those that think that macintosh doesn't crash, I have news for u ---> it can go down so hard, the revival will take half an hour and I was dead serious.. And since pentium not long ago announced the 3giga monster, I really think that speed differences are not that important anymore.. Ofcourse the mac will be on top still, but it also much more expensive still and there are far more wares for pc than for mac.
If the move to mac is for the show off and for the kool looking Powerbook I am totally in favor of the designers of the future from Apple and for me, the ONLY huge advantage of the mac is the REAL FIREWIRE it has and not the I-link that the pc has which I still haven't found any use for it, but I am still looking ( not very hard I have to admit )
Good luck anyway Trip-

i only want to add my 2 cents in favor of Mac hardware:
the GHz of the CPU does not really say much about its
performance.
1) the "performance" of computer is measured by many parameters, and the clock rate is only 1 of them. (there's a so called CPI=clocks per instruction, MIPS measurements, data rate, pipe width, pipeline forwarding level etc.)
2) the cache hierarchy of Mac is much besser all the time. and therefore the audio processing which causes the computer to read many things in advance, has advantage running on Mac hardware.
(which makes the memory and hard disk the bottleneck. )
another thing: macs are more "responsive" - when the computer is under load, the GUI is not slowed too much, so the user doesn't loose hair on working with it.
and of course the aesthetic look & feel never killed art people.
good luck, Trip-!
bom.

MAC vs PC
some news !
now dayz MACS are slower then PC ...
now after saying that ,,,
i would say is not all about power of your CPU ...
there are few more factors that makes one to consider moving from pc to mac ( or visa versa)
* consider the headhach of building your PC system
from your fan model to your internal speaker unit
ofcourse you can ask your local dealer for a copy of
a monster unit ... but consider it will do you some chipset conflicts .. or will cost as new mac ..
* 98 se , xp home , xp pro ,2k ?what da fak ? how many times a PC in its life times changes its system ?
* regarding software , you just get better .. plug ins
(or actually less to choose/ d/l but still better ) better writen softwares ,
*blue screen ? its still there in xp ,right ?
*2-3 system down in a year !!
OS .. "unix" is considered as the best operating system in terms os stability . and 2dayz MACs are shiping with a unix based system , aka OS X , yes its new and it look better then XP ,
MACs are shipping as one "tested unit"
internal plug ins !! and internal midi !! aka core midi /core audio , much better preformance from a music software when it looks for plug ins for its OS !!
it works better in regards to plug ins deley , there is deley (ms/sample accourate in every VST plug in
regarding midi .. i think PCs had a software driver
b4 , macs had OMS a software that linked your midi unit to your software ... but i belive that steve jobs wouldnt do just that but better ... dont know ..
laptops PC's still have a reputation of not there YET ..
MAC laptop is just a onother MAC but portable ...
LOGIC 6 ?
anyway you can get good deals with a 2nd hand MACs
i have a G4 400 for 3500 nis !!! and if you add a new CPU card (1 gig = 1.7-8 on PC) for 1200$ its realy a good deall !!
anyway its just computers ....
5years ego ATARI was the best thing ... remember ?
peace
btw : new MAC news ( G5 )
