SO, i ordered myself one of these, last night.. Suppose to come next week, and yes its usb2.0 (about time), now, initially i was looking at some firewire but since my laptop does not have the port, i was out of options. Those with firewire, do tell if you consider your firewire sound device to be better or faster than usb2.0.

usb 2.0 is better than firewire, in most aspects.

nope...

usb gives a 480mbps data transfer that isnt constant its peak..
firewire 400 gives 400mbps of constant flow of data and with its own controller dedicated for the interface u use...
how many usb stuff have you connected on your pc usb ports?
usb3 is a real improvement on the protocol.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

Tell me please, in what scenario would you use 400 mbps?

Firewire is buggy, has lots of compatibility problems, is becoming less supported (good luck on finding a new laptop with a fw port), the jack can be damaged very easily and give me a few more minutes and I'll think of more reasons why it sucks.

USB just works perfectly.

All based on my own experience with both FW and USB devices.

exept the port being flimsy in laptops (4pin) ive had no problems in the last 8 years whatsoever...

in case of multitrack recordings when lots of channels are being streamed at once you will see the benefit of the constant 400mpbs.

stability and latency was always better in fw than usb.

i still find laptops with firewire ( toshiba that i use mostly )
compatibility yes cos of poor implementations form developers yes ( texas being the best )
and yes its becoming less supported due to usb convenience not critical performance.

usb3 looks promising tho.

all this based to my experience always.

so you dont use win 7? cuz thats what i have.. now i am scared.. could you elaborate please on what exactly going on that is bad with win 7 and fast track ultra..

apperantly problems can be avoided if you do following :
Windows 7 64-BIT Driver Installation for M-AUDIO Fast Track Ultra

1. Download the Vista 64 BIT Driver from M-Audio
2. Save the download: FTU_V64_5_10_00_5099.exe file to your desktop
3. Right click on FTU_V64_5_10_00_5099.exe
4. Go to properties
5. Go to compatiability tab
6. Check mark Run this program in compatibility mode for:
7. Select Windows Vista
8. Under Privlege Level, check mark Run this program as an administrator
9. Click ok
10. Now proceed the installation of the driver

So far, my USB gear was more stable than the FW gear, on 4 different computers and 3 different operating systems.

with any device connected via UBS i get so much latency to a point where the device is rendered useless.
USB devices i've tried include;
Sound interfaces
Synthesizers
Drum kits.
Mixers
Keyboards
All virtually useless via USB. because of latency

hooking up via FireWire makes a world of difference in the respond time and gives you immediate feedback.. vital for a thing like drums and keyboard would'nt you agree.

My USB works on minimal latency.
Oh well.
