well i tried the search tool and i only found topics about the m-audios BX5 as well as BX8, so i would guess that the BX5a* are new ones aren't they? checked out the M-Audio web page and they only have the technical specifications and its about it. my question here is.. have anybody tried them yet??? does anybody has them?? any feedbacks or comments about them?? i basically bought them today and quite honest i got a nice deal on them ($350dls include the pair of live wires* cables.) i had on mind i was going to spend about 500dls in a good pair of monitors and after i listen to them and actaully turn on the volume at the store, i could hear a great response and a great quite clean wave of sound coming out of the pair so i basically decided to buy them without knowing what i was getting.....their are my first set of monitor i ever bought so i think their cool for now i guess....... here's the page http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileBX5a-main.html

you cant do anything wrong with m-audio monitors, they have a very clean and stable sound. you can use a subwoofer too do optimize the setting, because the low-frequences are clean but not "pumping", if you like a pumping feeling from the sub you should add a woofer, this is way maudio offers you.

...mhhh...I connected them to a Yamaha 01v mixer and must say that that mixing became smooth anc clearer, everithing sounds perfect...but:
as a track goes outside from my studio it has little high frequencies, too much basses.
I think it's beacause bx5a have too little basses and too-much high freqs...maybe they are not so balanced.
Any suggestions? |

@kin beat:- brother i was also planning to buy bx5 but switched on to alesis m1 active mk2 though they r little bit expensive than bx5 but believe me i found alesis's sound better than bx5
just an opinion
i would suggest u to go and have a few demos with your kind of music in the shops, showrooms of the monitors before taking any decision coz then u won't regret

You are right. The Bx5 are a bit bright and the bass is not very prominent so if you are not aware of that during mixing you will end up with dark and bass heavy mixes.
You just need to know how a well balanced mix sounds on your monitors. |

YES! I also have a pair of Bx5's. Lately Ive really tried working with them but im not satisfied with them I must say. Can't hear a thing whats going on in the low end. Ok its not completly fair to blame the Bx5's; the room is also VERY important. My room sucks. Im soon going to treat my room with some absorbers/diffusers and then see if the Bx5 are going out. |

Yes, but generally if you place them in the right way and near to you, working with a reasonable level, you should not suffer so much from the environment around you...at least this is why generally people uses nearfield monitors.
This is what the manual says about placing them (ok, it's quite obvious...):
1. The two units and the listener should basically align to form a regular triangle. Refer to the following
diagram.
2. Position the monitors so that the top of the woofers are level with your ears in a normal listening
environment. Refer to the following diagram.
3. Place the BX5a’s vertically with the woofer on the bottom. Placing the BX5a’s horizontally is not
recommended.
I did it from the first day, they are perfectly placed, but I think they simply sound like this.
Placing absorbers/diffusers in the room is expensive & no good result is given for shure...and it's not the easiest task to do...
So: if you have the old bx5 you could try to adjust little by little the way they sound, beacause they have controls to do it on the back.
If you have the new bx5-a...as I have...you have nothing to do :-( S**t !
Anyway they are not sooo bad for the price.
This week I tried playing 2 different masters on several "end-user" equipments and must say that on some it doesn't sounds soooo bad...in some it does, but on those players not only my master was crap...and in general the level between parts and frequencies are quite balanced. With a little of EQ on the master you can correct everything. It's not sooo pro...but bx5 also aren't pro ;-)

...I was forgetting...
...where I live there are others who can't live constantly at the rythm of psytrance ;-) ...so I was thinking about spending some money about a good pair of headphones, considering that I'll have to use them quite a lot. Ok, headphones aren't ok for the mastering process...but at the end of the job they could also provide a little help for reference in the high frequencies...no?

Yep, bx5a typically dont have much bass response, so you might end putting too much bass in your mixes.
To stay with M-Audio, the BX8a have a lower frequency response and kind of a pumping feeling about bass, so maybe it's a better choice for our music, where low frequencies are so important, so you can actually hear what you do with these frequencies and don't add too much.
Have fun!!

I have BX5a's and everything in this thread is true. They've served me well but I always, without fail put too much treble and too much bass in - you just can't hear it correctly. However, I just listen to it in my car ( my second studio ) and then roll off the excess and the mixes are great. So... I think I'll get used to them, they're great other than that. |

Right, at the end of the day, what really counts is: Know your monitors!! ... So you know what you're doing |
