Hi, I got the M-Audio Firewire 410 recently and have been having some problems with it...
Already tried with Cubase Xs 2 and 3 and same problem happens...
I open Cubase, everything is smooth and good, after a while it starts making huge clips and the sound gets completelly distorted.
I notice this happens when quick changes are made in the display, like scrolling the arrange bars from one side to other or moving the mixer from one side to other when sound in playing...
Anyone having similar problems...you think it could be some problems with the graphics card? its a new laptop with 128mb graphics memory independent, so i think it should run smoothly...
If anyone has any tip I would appreciatte it a lot
thanks |

Well... the issue I was having was that the sound dropped out completely while using Logic or ableton... That issue hasn't reared it's ugly head at all in at least 6 months, but a similar issue like what he mentioned did happen to an extent using Ableton Live during a live set recently. (You remember that incident incredibly well Aeon) I'm convinced that it's was the software that caused the audio degradation (the sound thing has never happened to me in Logic)
Personally I think one of the issues could be the fact that the FW port on the back of PC laptops are usually the 4 pin ones... What would happen if you got a PCI MCIA Firewire adaptor for the 6 pin to 6 pin connection?
I am not the biggest fan of my audio card, but I haven't really been able to afford a new one yet That I liked... I would like to make sure it is the card that is the problem before I ditch it...

One thing that I did do pretty frequently was find this program, (once I get home I can provide more information) It changed the amount of ram routed to my graphics card... After I started using the program, the whole dropout thing ceased... So it could be as simple as the video card taking resources from the FW card... As soon as I get home I should be able to let you know what the program was...

Ulysses and Doubledawg are the programs that I was referring to... Ulysses shows your cpu usage as well as ram usage and doubledawg changes the latency settings on the hardware such as your video card...

Ohh god... A friend was going to USA yesterday and I asked him to buy this sound card for me... And I will use it with Cubase!!!
I didn´t understand very much about the problems with the firewire port... It happens with notebooks or with desktops with PCI Firewire ports???
Probably I still have time to ask him to not buy this card.... Should I do that?? Do you guys recomend another good firewire sound card, with same caracteristics???
ThanX |

well, Im using firewire 410 without problems.... what is the motherboard you r using? what is the pcmcia adaptor? theres some incompatilble issues with some vendors. I Experienced problems with midi and AC power (very very sensible to oscilations) but not with audio at all.
Im using a sony vaio notebook with the last driver from maudio, windows xp home, cubase sx 3.

Well.... I have just bought a HP ZV5000 Notebook...
There is a PCMCIA port, but it has a firewire port as well, so I think I wont need any other device for connecting it!
I will use it with Cubase SX 3. I have just asked for the sound card, but with all of this complainings about the sound card I got affraid of buying it! I don´t want to have problems!
What is the best? Wait and see? Because this is the best price/effort sound card i have seen by the specifications!
Regards!

I've gotten the impression that it's the firewire interface itself that causes a lot of the problems on PCs. Despite all the Firewire vs USB2.0 debates, I've yet to hear any good reason why firewire is better for audio, especially considering how much trouble peopole have, with everything from crashes to simple "the cord gets unplugged really easily".
Firewire is native for Macs but was "imported" for PCs, so a lot of the drivers are iffy and often people have issues with 3rd party firewire cards. And Mubali already mentioned issues with the 4 vs 6 pin laptop plugs.
Anyway I've never had any problems using either my Tascam or Emagic USB 2.0 interfaces. http://soundcloud.com/aeon604
