Hi all producers,
I really would want to touch a very sencetive and important subject. it is last 10% of all production structure but perhaps most important 10% which matter so much - mastering...
my overall recording level after mixing a raw mixdown is usually -6db. i know that mastering is mainly eqing things and making loud things louder, but how to do it w/o damaging sencetive dynamics of the track and making sure original beef of the track is being preserved and not sounding squished?
before i send my tracks to a record label, what should i use to make it sound on a proper level? i understand it is ofcourse a personal pereference depending on each track and involves lots of listening, but im sure thereis a few default tools you guys use before you send it out. what would be the best program to use for mastering SF or WL? what would be the best EQ to use for masteing? would you use compression/limiting on mastering? what maximizers would you use? please if you have any hints, ideas, regular fx, and/or routins - you share would be greatly appreciated!
Thanx!
Deepest Respect

Mastering is not the most important 10%. Actually, you don't even need to do it. If you feel that there are things to be eq'd, do it yourself to the specific sounds before mastering, while doing the mix. It'll sound a whole lot better.
When you send the track to the label, they usually ask it to be unmastered, uncompressed (that is -6db) so they can give the track to their own mastering engineer which probably will do the job much better than you.

Once the label has accepted the track, and agreed to master it, then send them the mixdown withOUT compression/limiting/EQ on master bus, if you work in 24 bit, send the 24bit mixdown. Set vol so there are no clips.
If however you are sending a demo to a label for a listen, maybe do a quick home mastering session to beef it up a bit --->
