Hi folks
I'm proud to show you my first commercial CD cover I've designed for Avatar Records:
http://uranium.by.ru/images/lumen.jpg
for the new Lumen's Ambient music album.
The whole design of CD-print, back cover and inner booklet will be soon in my portfolio here: http://go.to/uran
Meanwhile, you can find it at CD stores.

Thank you
Actually, you were right Tzahi, when about a year ago you told me that it's really hard working as freelancer with any label.
They don't know clearly what they want and reject every sketch you offer.
These days I had to design the new Goa-Gil's album. I offered them 3 different sketches + a lot of different art-styles based on my old works. After they reject that all, I just gave up. However, I'm not ashamed about that...
By the way, where are you now? Are you still a teacher at Bezalel?

welcome.

the hardest part of deigning covers is actually the definition of the word "sketch" I think. and you probably know what I'm talking about. . I mean, it's not like you can actually sketch it in pencils cause many ideas just won't go though that sketch.. unlike in concept work for the tvgamesmovies industry where you just sketch a character and an environment and most likely the client gets the idea. in covers it's different because the idea can be expressed through many effects combined together. though lots of bits of details. etc. .

so you start doing this "sketch" in photoshop by adding some layers here and there.. maybe some parts in 3d, etc. the client don't like it and tell you to try something similar but in more details.. so you add more details. then he tells you to fix something that looks simple to him but for you it's changing almost the entire work from scratch..
welll. you do that fix, add details.. and spend lots of hours on it.. even days.

you wake up the next day and show it to the client.. he says "that's nice. but let's try another sketch.... "
while eventually this "sketch" was actaully weeks of work.

there's also the problem where u work with the artist while the label guy disqualifing your entire work eventually.. I had this twice already.

and that's the biggest problem in covers making - some labels can just ask for a job, wait for you to do it and then say "err. no tnx". graphic design studios usually do works only if the client sign on a job order and get a tax receipt before the job was done. and that is to avoid working for free. however as a freelancer labels would tell you "you are one of 10 ppl I work with. why should I take your work?" no matter if you give a tax receipt or not. and no matter how much time you already spent ..

there're even more uglier parts but that's not the place to write it. .

anyhow, I think the buttom line is.. if the trance scene is deep in your vains and you'll be so thrilled to see your design in stores then it's worth it. not to mention all the connections you make once u're more and more in this field. but if you try to make a living from it - it sure doesn't worth the time you spend and sure doesnt worth the money labels pay ..

as for me, I"m not working in betzalel since last yaer, these days I work in DPSI. it's a studio near bet shemesh. (very close to all the parties area.. ) we're working on some TV shows and already started working on a feature film which will be the next movie of Star Trek.

Actually, I also thought that using dolphins on the cover is retro and out... However, in this project the conception chain was:
Esperanto -> Language -> Communication -> TV + Dolphins (telepathic communication)

...simple? huh?

Soon, I'll finish my web portfolio construction, and I'll show the whole CD-cover + booklet + sticker... design.
