The Q-series is quite transparent to my ears, which I like, and stacking up the bands means nothing gets through below the turnover point. Check out the HPF action of the other EQs you use on an accurate spectrum analyser and you'll see that many of them let stuff through where you'd think they'd be cutting it out. There's nothing wrong with this if it gets you a sound you like, but I reckon that if you'll be playing your track over 1000 times louder than you listen to it at home (ie. on a large soundsystem), it's worth getting rid of it as at those levels 'low frequency clutter' can affect clarity.

Depending on the plug-in and the settings used, linear-phase EQ can often add 'pre-ringing', causing smearing of transients, especially low-frequency ones. I've heard this using Waves LinQ Lowband before.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

So if i understand it good, you should use this on all the sounds where you cut the bass?

I always use the equim ( http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/2003/Equim-20.html )

Is it better to use the Waves Q instead?

Thnx for the insightfull information           SQL: http://www.myspace.com/sqlmusic

Colin, what sort of Q setting do you use when doing these brickwall highpasses?           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

HPF on Waves Qx only has one setting, no matter what it says in the parameter box           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I have another dumb question (sorry i'm bored)

Should there be any difference at all in the sound if instead of inserting the highpass directly on a midi/audio channel you insert it on a group channel which the midi & audio channels are linked to?           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

For a brick HPF wall as mentioned I use the graphic eq of cooledit 2000. You can set it on -90dB. I tend to cut everything besides bass -90dB at 60hz and below (for starters). Gives me more headroom.           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

Before I even start a track i throw in Voxengo CurveEQ on the master bus..then solo each track and view the output in voxengo to see what's going on, then usually just sony track eq (comes with acid, simple and easy on the processor) to mess with it.

yep i use Sony Track Eq also...take's almost nothing from Cpu. Sometimes i put even 2 Sony track eq's on the same sound if i need much more bands to adjust. I also use in Fl studio , the new Parametric Eq 2. it's sounds very good and it has a realtime spectral analyzer.           NEW ALBUM OUT SOON !!!

you can't group midi&audio tracks together - you possibly meant audio tracks and vsti audio outputs, but these are no midi channels.
theoratically, it is the same thing, i do this all the time - this is the reason mixer groups were invented. but anyway, because sounds can generate (even if the chance for this is rather small) new harmonics when mixed, i would recommend using low shelf eq on the tracks on which you already have an eq, and group the tracks on which you do not. and you do not need waves to do this           http://myspace.com/voxproject

from Sonalksis SV-517mkII EQ manual:

Q: I've heard that 'linear-phase' equalisers are ideal for audio applications - Is
the SV-517 a linear-phase equaliser?

A: The SV-517 directly models traditional analogue filters, and as such it is nonlinear in its phase response. However, while linear-phase filters have their uses, they are not necessarily the best choice for equalising audio; in fact in normal tracking/mixing EQ, standard linear phase equalisers have some drawbacks. The most obvious problem with linear-phase EQ's is the latency introduced into a signal path. The SV-517 has zero latency, but the process of ensuring linear phase means that linear-phase EQ's inherently delay the signal by a significant
amount. This delay must be compensated if the signal is coupled with another audio track (as will be the case in any normal recording/mixing scenario).
Another issue with linear-phase EQ's is the relative lack of control available in manipulating LOW FREQUENCIES. Using standard techniques, the finer the control
required at low frequencies, the more processing power required by the algorithm
to implement this control. Relatively sharp peaks and troughs in the frequency response at low frequencies (as can be easily achieved by the SV-517) are simply not achievable with many linear-phase equalisers.
The SV-517 uses high quality minimum-phase filters, just like many traditional analogue EQ units.

x-hum

where to cut ?
depend on original sample/preset.

i'd say 24-45hz with variable lp filters (6db 12db 18db etc.) will do it perfect.          www.sattelbattle.com
