hey there.... tried to use the search but i dint really find nethin regardin the same....

now i have a lil problem... when i lisen to my tracks compared to other ppls production i realise my tracks volume sounds relatively lower dan others .... now is that normal? and mayb after a master job it should sound as good as it sounds for all?

also note i when i render my tracks i render dem at 0 db.... is it alright mayb if i boost it a lil bit and mayb render it at over 0 db? would tht leave enough room for the mastering engineer?

Ps: i use fl studio and the circular panning law function if off... nethin else i could do to boost the volume??

hope you guys can help me out...

cheers!!!

It is normal that it doesnt sound as loud as mastered tracks from cd. Don't worry about it. Just read some of the topics about mastering and you can kinda do the job yourself after a while. But leave it to professionals if you ever get a chance to release some stuff.

Don't boost your track above 0 db by raising the volume. It will only make it sound worse. It is better to master it afterwards or put a limiter/ compressor on the masterbus if you want to boost it.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Yes, that is perfectly normal... you fix this in the "masterging" stage... but when we are noobs and bedroom producers we don't have money to pay a mastering engineer so we stick a LIMITER / MAXIMIZER on the master bus to get nice levels (this is just a quick fix, real level adjustment comes with real mastering).

So by now, just insert a Waves L2, Voxengo Elephant or any limiter / maximizer vst you like on the master bus and squeeze your track with the treshold slider. Just do it at the end of your production process, don't mix with a limiter because it will ruin your perception.

cheers.

just remember though, that a perfect mix doesn't really need mastering.

My earlier tracks were dreadful because they were far to bassy so the volume was maxing out before the tops were sufficently audible on other peoples sound systems.

I try to get volume out of my tracks by making sure there are no clashing frequency's and cutting around 18000 and 20hz depending on the key of the track. Have you bounced your track and had a good look at the waveform? Do any of the larger peaks sound like they shouldn't be peaking? Does the bass sound like it's at a good level on a variety of speakers/listening positions?

I understand that folks want their tracks at a good level so they can play them out and what not, but if you really want to improve there's a good list of things you should be ticking off before you start thinking about master channel compression. Master channel compression is a mind fuck. Any time someone mentions a plugin and expects that to fix everything is merely feeding you the most false of hope.

Just remember you are not going for volume, but you're trying to make your track sound as good as possible. There's no better way to get some good volume than your best mixing.

when you render, make it -0.3dB, this takes care of unwanted artifacts 99.9% of the time.

I have looked at a lot of what is called "pro mastering" and found out that majority of them are hopelessly over compressed.

LOL not really, just mastered vs. unmastered! Some good advice here for people who want to give their tracks a quick and dirty boost without doing the whole mastering thing.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
