Low end monitoring...

Hi, is it necessary that your monitors go below 38hz to perceive, shape and tighten a low end properly to have it become deep and balanced? I'm really confused on what I should invest in. I'm not sure if I should buy a sub, or go with monitors that just don't go as low, but prevent phasing. I just can't seem to decide. I want my tracks to be heavy in the sub, but I don't know if buying a sub is a good idea. Any advice?

a better idea is to buy good monitors that go down to 40hz and invest the rest of the money in acoustic treatment instead of the sub.

I have my room acoustically treated already. Its as balanced acoustically as its going to get. Spent about $900 on treatment.

Well a speakers that gores down to 38Hz will still produce below that. You can look at the -10dB level as well as the -3dB level.

Think about playback systems.
think about what sub frequencies are.
Will your music be any better?

There are certain monitors that translate very well to subsystems..

but also having a subsystem is a good thing...

It says the Adam P22A's respond from (± 3 dB) 38Hz - 35Khz.
Where as the A7's are from (± 3 dB) 46Hz (which I felt when I heard them that the bass wasn't as good as the BM5A's, that i currently own) The Sub8 (± 3 dB) 28Hz - 150Hz. I wish I knew someone, or could speak with someone who has these or has heard these to know what would be a better choice for me. I'm on the edge haha.

I have used the BM6a's with sub in 5.1 and with out the sub for music.

Personally I don't think you need to worry about a sub.

Can you elaborate on your room treatment.

i think for that price you can t have a monitor that sound good on all the spectrum ( i don t know much monitors so maybe i m wrong)but if you can have the a7 +the bm5a i m sure it ll be helpfull to have both. some sound engineers say it s not how good your monitors are it s how many pair you have

I'm selling my BM5A's to my friend because I want to upgrade. As for my treatment. I have 12 acoustic panels in total. 8 mid/high, 4 bass traps. They are professionally made acoustic cotton panels from www.technature.ca . They have made quite a big difference in my room. My room sounds pretty damp now and my stereo image and dynamics in the room have greatly improved. My BM5A's sound very good now, but they don't go as low as I need.

Well a7's wouldn't be an upgrade. The P22's would be a slight upgrade and should go low enough. But then Dynaudio offer speakers with more bottom. Are you writing hip hop?

Would Hip hop be the only reason for good low end monitoring? hehe

No but since when was it essential to go below 40Hz? Especially in a room with only 4 bass traps?

yeah true but how often do you really cut everything below 40hz? there will still be some info down there that is good to have a idea about... But as i work with a subsystem its more of a issue to get a pair of well trimmed monitors... i tend to cut too much bass sometimes just cause of room problems and lack of acoustic treatment, still my satellites are placed on stands and i have foam on the wall behind them, also i have my seating as far out as possible without taking too much space for normal activity's hehe

but of course its not a big issue here,
If you really want to monitor the low end you find some dual subbass system and treat the room for bass reflection more proper.

But i think hip hop producers use Event or Krk.. hehe..

bass reflections? its more about axial standing waves/modes.

So much great electronic music has been made without the need for a sub or speakers that go below 40Hz.

Room treatment is a good idea but a purpose built studio is better. I would not recommend a sub in a room which is not a purpose built control room. It will create more problems than it solves. 4 bass traps will not fix that.

Ok, well besides talking about acoustics, which I feel my room sounds great compared to before. I don't feel I have bass reflection issues. My question was about the monitors efficiency compared to my bm5a's for monitoring 50hz - 30hz.
