cutting the bass at anything below its fundamental frequency should be okay and would not harm the sound. theres no way that im gonna rape the fundamental just so my kick fits.
so is there any point in applying a high pass to a bass sound at all? why does everyone seem obsessed in doing this?

it depends on what you what from the bass to do
for example i am making techno - i dont want the bass as a "main" if i can say so
the bass is just to fill the place - but not in all tracks.
effel - i cant answer your question there are many obsessions here on this forum

nectarios i know it was classic wasnt it.... thats in my list of all time hilarious things i've read on production forums.

to be fair... i've heard enough commercial releases that have this thin, no-subs feel to them... so i guess people just want to imitate this sound. personally i hate it but like Te_nTe says everyone is setting out to do something different

@effel - the only point of a low-cut i can think of is to save headroom, make it easier to pump the overall track volume up massively without running into problems with the subs. pretty lame tho if you ask me, cosmosis managed to pack heavy subs into his tracks back in 95           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

and hence the deep rolling sound that was so well connected with cosmosis. They didn't do 'toy tracks' - they did wall of sound           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman
