Loud crackle with chopped loops in Ableton

I'm not sure what's causing this or how to fix it. Sometimes when I use a loop that I have deleted a section out of, I will randomly hear a loud crackle sound (the channel goes up to 26.99 dbs and it generally scares the crap out of me).

This has happened with a non chopped loop before, but it happens more often with a chopped loop. Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it? It's done this with different loops from different sample packs so it's gotta be an Ableton thing. There also doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it (not specific to the type of sound). It usually happens at the beginning of the loop. Any help would be great. Thanks!           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

did you post the same thing here on the ableton forum? they are usually pretty good about addressing ableton specific problems. sometimes if you email tech support they can tell you exactly what the problem is too if you give them a detailed description of what is happening.

Yeah I should probably post it there, thanks for the suggestion.

I like to post stuff here in case someone has a similar problem.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

chop means that you cut the samples?

you should fade in and fade out all the samples u use, also when you cut them, you need to fade in and fade out the little parts 0.1
i know this from cubase, but this is for every kind of Sequencer and should be used always to avoid the clicks from the samples           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

Audio regions that are not chopped at 0 cross points, and don;t have small fades, will yield crackles.
But your problem is different since you get crackles from loops that you haven't edited/chopped. And the crackles you get from such lousy audio editing, don't send the meters through the roof.

Like suggested, try the Ableton forums.
Good luck sorting it out.

Chop meaning that I deleted something from the original loop (like when I want to take out a snare drum or something). Fading doesn't help .           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

It's also not at where I chop the samples, it's usually at the beginning of the loop. I doubt it's a simple matter of chopping correctly, it's pretty apparent that something is just fucking up. This is also why I have a limiter on my master channel .          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

If you really want to use that loop, go into the audio region, find that one sample (is it one sample?) that clips, and silence it.

Changing the volume doesn't do anything. I've muted the channel the loop is on and it still happens...

It sounds like the cpu is getting overloaded.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Are there any general fixes for cpu overloading? Any idea why an audio loop would do this? I can come up with some work arounds, but would rather get this fixed so I don't have to do that.

I don't usually use loops, but it's a pain when this happens when I want to.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Is multicore support off/on? Try turning it off/on and see if that makes a difference.

How many clips are you using in your project with the clipping audio? Do you use a laptop? Is the project stored on the laptop's disk? If so, try using an external (with power... not a portable) and see if that makes a difference.

Are the chopping audio clips at a different sample rate etc. from the other audio in your project? Try converting th efile to the same sample rate as your other clips and see if that makes a difference.

Multicore is on.

The clipping doesn't depend on the number of clips or really the overall cpu usage. It will do it if I have 1 or 100 channels in the project. I'm working all off my internal drive. It's just strange that it happens often when I delete a section of a loop - that's the only mitigating factor.

I'm not sure about the sample rates, but I'll check it out next time I notice and see if that makes a difference- thanks.

I don't use loops often at all so I haven't spent a bunch of time trouble shooting. I'll see what those tips do, thanks Jason!          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Can you hear the crackle if you render/crop/consolidate the clip into a new wav file?

Try turning off multicore, does the crackle go away?
