I just got an audiophile 192 and to my dismay, the thing doesn't seem to have any way of doing loopback recording where I can route the card's ouput through the inputs and directly record my vst instruments.
This is supremely imporant for me. Previously I was using my audigy's 'what-u-hear' feature to do this. It allows me to solo an instrument track, select an audio track and in 3 clicks record a synth section without having to fuss with file->export->audio mixdown, find my audio folder, scroll down to find the imported audio, move it, delete the old track blah blah blah. Recording directly into the track also keeps things fairly neat as I can click the event, type in a new file name and now my 'audio' subfolder has my _RevFlangerCrash.wav, _SynthCadence.wav, or _KickVerb01.wav. Later I can sort my audio folder and find all these _'d files and drag and drop verb tails and reverse flangered crashes as much as I want. Basically I love this workflow so much that you couldn't pay me to use a sound card that doesn't allow it.
Right now I'm thinking of returning the Audiophile 192 and getting something else. Would anyone who has experience with this be able to recommend a sound card that definitely allows this? |

I'd suggest to look into tapeit2... exactly what you want, except that it records in 32 bit floating point without digital/analog -> analog/digital conversion. so it may even preserve some steps where you might loose quality.
search the forum for other posts about it, you'll see it's awesome.

Tapeit is kind of a kludge compared to doing it within Cubase. I set my loop points, press the asterisk on my numpad and I start recording. Cubase writes my lanes for me if I record it multiple times (say I'm tryin to catch that perfect tweak off a free running lfo) and I can quickly mute/unmute them to find the good ones. They also record in more or less the same position that I want them at in my sequence.
The recording quality bit is interesting, although I think unless you're doing the loopback physically the digital/analog conversion won't be an issue. Probably won't be 32 bit floating point though.
Thanks for the suggestion. |
