if we are talking starting point then its all good sure.

and it is what it is!!! no pun intended at all, honest

look i say use all tools and sure romples are also tools, and yah like anyone i use them for things too, but the OP asked for thoughts on how to make nice soundscapes, so why not give something deeper than the "oh, use omnisohere" comment.

you don't need to ask on a forum if the answer you seek is a simple "use x rompler/synth".

There are a million and one ways to make a soundscape/texture/atmosphere etc. Through audio processing...through from-init synthesis. Through field recording...etc etc

Omnisphere has an astounding number of preset sounds that are just ludicrously great sounding in the area of texture/atmosphere. You can learn so much about how to program textures from analyzing those patches and re-engineering/altering them alone - let alone how much you learn building new ones from scratch.

Not trying to nitpick or be a cunt about it or anything, but referring to omnisphere as a 'rompler' is kind of doing it a disservice - and its not really true. It'd be like saying that a Moog synth is a filter.

Sure, it *has* a filter - but it is more than a filter. Omnisphere comes with samples in it as well as a fully fledged oscillator/synth architecture so you could call it a Rompler...but it is so much more than that.

When I sit down with other synths, I rarely if ever come out with something synthed from scratch that sounds appealing/interesting to me in terms of texture/soundscape stuff. I can't recall how many times I've sat down with Omnisphere and cranked out something that really surprised me.

I have tons of tools available if I'm feeling inspired, and if not then hey I'll take a look at a crazy Richard Devine patch or something else as a starting point...and very often wind up with something that sounds *completely different* from the preset sound but just as high quality.

IMO that's why so many people respond with 'Omnisphere' to this question, because if you do the work and learn the ins and outs of that synth you are pretty much guaranteed to get ridiculously great soundscapes.

I've also heard great things about alchemy too, yes

Michael Norris spectral drone maker can do some cool things and its free!

And a good way to begin to teach yourself how to use slow lfos and filter sweeps to create soundscapes.

faxinadu Oh I wasn't offended mate don't worry I actually tried exactly what you mentioned, I think it could be much better if I learnt to make them from scratch.

I probably would have already tried Omnisphere already if it weren't for the size, I kinda like using small instruments, But proablywill end up trying however, that way I can have an opinion about it.

Yeah I've gotten nice stuff with Alchemy (Filthy stuff and good in sound quality), but I've just used the presets and tweak them.

Now that you and willsanquil say this I'll proably try to start creating from init patch

from scratch:

take a mic, any mice, even a shitty one, better yet - a shitty one! the lofi quality will only add character to your sound.

for example, when i visited paris some years ago i took a walkman (as in cassette tape) recorder and some cheap mics and recorded the metro trains, people, crowds, anything really.

when i got back home i passed these tapes through huge proccesing chains with the typical delays, reverbs, filters and shapers.

thr trick for me is with the movement, slow slow parameter sweeps with lfos, long envelopes and automation.

----

another idea is to take a white noise source and chain it through various filters in serial/parallel and mixing the outputs to produce special sonice characters. you can use keyboard tracking to keep things (somewhat) melodic.

----

automate everything and anything and don't be afraid to chain millions of fx

Well, in that train of thought:

That way you don`t have to go to Paris to record stuff. Choose your favorites samples and follow faxinadu`s instructions

but the whole point is to add some unique touch, something personal.

no need for paris, stick a mic out of the window when it rains.

take a lead or pad sound from your track, record it to audio. take to a wave editor, pitch it down one or two octaves, put something like waves x-noise on it that will create a unique grainy filtered sound. put a huge reverb on it. filter sweep the whole thing. doppler the whole thing. eq and compress.

Too late I already bought my plane tickets to Paris

This is why I've been enjoying Camel Alchemy a lot, there is a lot of random noises you can chain together like people walking, or random animal like noises, the type of soundscapes I'm looking for.

But now that you mention a Mic, I'm really pumped for going sound hunting.
