Hey, first post - I've been stalking these forums for a while though I'm looking for some particular sounds, namely every lead sound used on Pleiadians - Alcyone and the acid sounds used in old infected tracks (Don't know much about hardware, but I'm assuming they aren't a tb303?). Insane, screaming acid leads basically. Can anyone recommend a good synth for this, and does anyone know what the original synths in the tracks I mentioned would be? Thanks |

i don't know what synths were used in those specific tracks, but it's not so much about a special synth, but about the technique used.
what do you have already? (computer/software..) |

i agree with pom: a nordlead is the synth you're looking for.
(+ distortion)

Have you finished playing with the much cheaper software synths?

looked at a few youtube videos on the nord lead, and it definitely sounds like what I want - so I randomly did a "best offer" on a nord rack 2 on ebay offering a lot less than the asking price, and won it LoL. Guess I have a nord rack now xD thanks guys!
@Subra - I like software synths a lot for fx/pads/texture, but for big leads i tend to get a lot of clipping and distortion with filters, and the sound is still too thin. (FL9, Sytrus, V-station, Sylenth1, ToxicIII) Whereas with hardware, you seem to get huge sounds instantly.. and I think I'd be far more productive with physical interactivity instead of clicking a mouse :] Btw your bass on "Enchanter Of The Dunes" is orgasmic. What is it? |

This only means that hardware got better presets. IMO, modern softsynths are just as good as hardware, and some even surpass them.

That's why they invented MIDI controllers.

That's Surge, a software synth.

Not true.
Hardware sounds indeed thicker.
No software sounds like the NL... mention one that comes close enough (discovery is far from it)... also physical interface is handier than any VST i know. |

If I understood well a Virtual analog synth has a processor which emulates the circuit processing and then generate sounds, using, obviously, software.
So how can it be true than a a VA hardware synth can sound better than a soft synth?
I am not an expert but if I was going to invest in hardware it will be a true analog synth.

and NL doesn't sound like Discovery.
Nothing sounds like the other, but is it any better?
Depends who you ask.

It is not just a cpu running a software.
Most of the times it has other features that give the trademark sound... can vary from filters to exciters and stuff before the output also the DAC and aliasing will give hardware VA much more rich sound than software.
The Virus and the NL, two of the most famous synths used in psytrance are VA and no software vst come close to this machines... maybe NI reaktor and a couple others stand at their side but just can't get there.
There have been several discussions on this board which expose the Disco vs NL issues... make your own conclusions. |

now see it from another perspective, can VA synths sound like absynth?

I would highly recommend a waldorf Q , The one with the 16 analog filters is an added + instead of those usual suspects.
And in the case of the Discovery , yes the NL sounds 100 times better and its not a subjective oppinion on which sounds better because the Discovery was a cheap alternative made to flatly emulate the NL, same with Synth1. So if someone were to ask you to freely choose between a Discovery and NL which would go for? Discovery cuz it sounds like no other.. seriously?
And lets see it yet again from another perspective,
Can you crack a Nord lead or a Virus? NO
Can you crack Absynth or any other soft synth for that matter and use it to make super big dancefloor hits without investment? YES , but is that right? NO ..but then why would u wanna pay for something when u can get it for free?
