How important is it?
It doesn't affect the sound.
Try it and find out if it helps you?
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

haha. Truthully, I use colors just for fun. Like if I'm using Synplant I'll color the track green like a plant. I enjoy it.
Darker sounds - darker colors
Brighter sounds - brighter colors
I say try it out. Using them to separate sections of a song is cool I guess. Doesn't really help me.
Feeling uninspired? play with the colors. haha.
I just wish I could make Cubase look cooler in general though like how you can put a background in Fruity Loops. I hate that grey shit.

make all ur track colours black, it makes ur music sound darker and more killah!
lol, in all seriousness. I think grouping colours slightly a shade lighter or darker for grouped instruments would be cool. Eg: drums: Hi-hat - green, snare - light green, toms - lighter green. etc |

My colour scheme starts off with red=low frequency -> blue=high frequency:
Kick, bass = deep red
Hats, cymbals = pale blue
Metal perc = shades of blue depending on how deep/heavy they are
Risers, FX = shades of purple
Wood perc, snares, loops, claps = shades of brown and orange depending on how deep/heavy they are
Leads = shades of green
Pads = shades of blue
Vocals, brass = bright yellow
303 = pink
I also use colours to distinguish between different content on a particular track, for example if there's two very distinct hihat rhythms in a tune I might colour their parts slightly different shades of pale blue. It's all about being able to get an instant overview of a track with as much information as you can give at once, and if you set up your pallette and colour tracks/parts as you go along it takes no extra time at all.

working on nuendo , everythings gray ,and use light colors (ie yellow) where editing is done, helps to remember/distinguish where you have changed the material in the same tracks

when the project crow up i sort the tracks and colorize the tracks and patterns in fl studio. we (2-4 people) work together on the same track( by sending the project per mail or chat). so we get a better overview about the songstructure and fx routing. for instance i use blue colors for drums, redtones for harmonic content and green for fx.
