Hi all,
I'm looking at getting a new laptop for DJ/Live PA purposes but I'm really struggling on deciding on what I'd really want, so I was wondering what you guys think...
I'm hoping to use Traktor and Ableton Live. For potential live acts, I was hoping to run Live with a mix of compiled loops in WAV with a few VSTs so I play the keys as well as be able to run my guitar through it so I can play some of that as well. I imagine I will be running effects through these instruments as well. I use lots of delays, filters, and reverbs, and I'm hoping to be able to run Omnisphere and maybe some other Native Instrument progs relatively safe with minimal pops/clicks (ideally none).
So with that said, I'm looking for a good bang for my buck. My main problem is that I'm torn between performance and price. So I'm really looking for something that will give me what I need without overspending. I find that I keep leaning towards getting that i7 2630QM powerhouse computer but why spend more money on something if I can potentially achieve the same thing with an i3 380M?
So I'm wondering, what would be the best laptop for my dollar. Like I said, I've been researching it for a while but I seem to be going in circles, so I'm hoping someone who's done the research and committed to a laptop is more on in the know than I am. Would I be okay running a i3 380M with 4 gigs ram if it was $600 or would I be better getting the i7 2630QM with 8 gigs ram for $1200?
Thanks for your help

I picked this laptop up a couple months ago when it was $800

It replaced my desktop and is my gigging laptop as well. Rock solid, haven't had any problems with it at all.
You don't need the 8 gig $1200 laptop. I would never, ever spend more than $1000 on a laptop these days for music purposes.
IMO spend $600-800 on a laptop with an i5, 4 gigs of RAM, 500 gigs of space that is made by a company with a reputation for stability and spend the rest of the money buying synths, monitors, paneling or whatever else you need.
These days, laptops are more than powerful enough to handle pretty much anything you can throw at them unless you're being incredibly wasteful and using a ton of CPU sucking plugs.

Check with your soundcard manufacturer if it goes well with the laptop. Or get a seperate soundcard that goes well with the new laptop. I decided to spend some bucks on a stable laptop so I got a mac. But that might be a bit more than you want to spend.
