Long Island outdoors?

I relocated to California 4 years ago, but my recent experience at the beautiful outdoor events in this state have made me think of my native East Hampton, and how wonderful it would be to have a psy party on a beach, facing the eastern sunrise, with the summer air staying warm all night

So, since I'm a newbie to the scene as a whole and a foreigner to the east coast scene--has anyone tried to throw a party in suffolk county and if so how badly did it fail?

The beach parties in Kings County over the years averaged well -- some recent ones continuing for days -- and Brooklyn is part of Long Island, sort of.

I've thought about where it would be good to throw an outdoor in LI, most likely far out east, Robert Moses or Sunken Meadow depending on permits and such. The best place I can think of is Fire Island-the ocean, the forest, the bay, the deer, etc. it would be cool to have an outdoor there!           "It's ALL about the clickety-clack!!!!"-Neuronympho

I used to go to this beach all the time as a kid: http://tinyurl.com/ycuc999

Might be difficult to pull off, though.

Outdoor parties on the East Coast are extremely difficult because it's a lot more densely populated, so even if you can find a space you risk a sound complaint from houses nearby. (Trust me, we threw one in the middle of NOWHERE, woods/mountains of New Hampshire...and got a sound complaint not even from the next town over, but the next county over). Prior to that experience I had really looked hard to doing an outdoor event closer to Boston, but that event made me a little hesitant. (Though I think there was an event a few years ago on the Boston Harbor Islands, that required people to boat out to the party, but it was a registered 'cultural event' with the National Parks service). I had looked at a lot of different possibilities, including renting a campsite and calling the Parks service about having an overnight event on a beach in Boston (I tried telling them it was an Indian spiritual thing about watching the sunrise......still no go). We have some friends who have been barely getting away with outdoor parties in Connecticut and near Albany.

Back to Suffolk county, I can suggest a few things.
Your best bet would probably be on the North Fork, far away from the Hamptons and away from the beach. (This still may be difficult with the gentrification of the area) You could try to get use of a farm and buy haystacks to build a sound barrier around the main dance area. A better idea, would be to rent a boat overnight that leaves at a specific time and returns at a specific time, and can accommodate a sound system and adequate dance space. Party-goers would have to be well informed about boat departure times and return times. You may also need to consider having all first-aid materials on board. Boats can get expensive, especially in the summer season so the party ticket might get more expensive than normal for a psy party. You could also try renting a campsite. Really look at google maps satellite photos before you do an outdoor to get a sense of how close houses are to your space.

I know how cool it would be to do it on the beach, but I also know how sensitive people with beach houses are to any perceived threats to their properties. Also water has its own acoustic properties, and may echo sound farther than you expect.

I grew up in east hampton and my mother is a local newspaper reporter. Trust me, I know all about the beach house people

Perhaps one of the younger Gardiner kids will let us use their island? Hahaha, fat chance.
