there are no hard and fast rules but dynamic memory allocation and automated garbage collectors start being slower than straight allocation circa ram / 6 I believe (although I'm no expert). With 4 gigs ram that means past 666 meg performance would gradually start degrading in a curve (so not be hugely impacted for a while), but then very heavy impacted.
On low ram devices this is a huge huge issue, but given how DAWs work, it's going to be a big problem here too.
I doubt the new interface is doing many less computations, or using less RAM. It seems to me the most likely and most significant factor here is that systems with loads of free RAM just run faster - hence not getting to within RAM/6 on 64 bit means a much smoother experience.
possibly. that is my hypothesis anyway.
where is the slugishness - when you move a fader? Or when you try and load or unload something (ie, computation, or RAM)..

thanks mate for the report.
drumer the sound it come with sound really good but just to make some midi file it s gonna be great to use with our own synthetic drum
yep, that's very true! you can drag the created file (with velocity and everything), to your own designed drum kit and it's pro drummer kind of writting...
I've noticed there's some presets in there, on the library with a cool feature on them, will have to look better: but I believe you can specify like c1 note is your kick, c# is your snare, for example, and it displays it like that. I know it's like that with the track stacks, but think it also translates into the piano roll.

about responsiveness, I really can't say much because I'd have to test it with a big and complex project and even loads of third party plug-ins. Since I decided to take the safe root and installed Mountain Lion and Logic X on a dedicated partition while keeping my main Snow Leopard rig how it was ('cause there's simply work to do here... eheh), didn't get to install third-party plug-ins in there, let alone build an entire track with it.
I know that with Logic 9 I tested the 64 bit option and didn't like it. The 32 bit bridge for using 32bit plug-ins while still having access to the extra ram and everything was very unreliable and just made things slower...
So, after a few tests, I kept my rig working in 32 bit mode and I'm fairly pleased with it. I think having loads of Ram must make a difference if we load something like Damage on Kontakt, from NI, and perhaps a big drum kit to... All those samples can be loaded into free RAM, right?
The midi instruments thing is actually quite cool. In the arp there's a gate option, rather simple tbo, but got some cool results sending note and velocity info to the Virus - the random and shuffle in there works like a charm to. And even doing that, like playing a chord or something, you can get to keyboard menu and select a root note, a scale (with all modes in there and everything) and it instantly changes the feel.
So, a positive thought about Logic X. If you can keep your previous rig but can run a parallel system to test, then it's a good option. I'm sure I'll be making use of the new midi plugs for recording stuff with the hardware synths. Did that already with the virus. Of course this is specially handy when going for melodic stuff, but can also make some cool gated/stepped stuff pretty easily - and instantly test with scales or chords and this and that...
Haven't seen an option for recording the midi created on the Arp, but I'm pretty sure it's possible.

On RAM running the daw in 32 bit mode on a 64 bit system with a load of RAM would allieviate the issue AFAIK bearing in mind this aspect is not my strength and I don't 'do' Apple but to a point computer science is computer science. Third party or not plugins should make no difference to the issue I'm talking about. RAM usage is RAM usage, whoever developed the plugin.
My advice at this point would be to not go X if you're happy (or happy enough) with 9 - the new features are nice rather than knockout. When a decent bridging plugin like jBridge becomes available, then reassess.

apple is somming with a new os soon..i will wait for this it s supposed to be enhanced performance wise..
it seems it s possible to use script to make midi plugins.. maybe some guys will share intresting stuff that could be fun

intresting... about the slugishness it s a bit everyhting..when pressing play / frame rate i dont know..not to the point of beeing a big issu but it can be a little annoying ..it seems in X all this is fixed and that it take same cpu usage for same project or a little less..

I have to say, it smacks of RAM, not CPU to me. If nothing is playing then tne CPU will be sitting there doing well, not much. And when you hit play then it gets a lot more loaded a lot more quickly!
So, if it's sluggish when it isn't doing anything, then, it strikes me that a lack of CPU resources almost certainly isn't the problem, and then there are only two real options left, either RAM, or, hard drive access of some description (probs either page file or disk pre-access for streaming). My money would be on the RAM scenario. But to be clear, that is a bet, not a certainty - this sort of thing can be very difficult to analyse.

never had such problems myself. and I've been using this for a while, my first Logic rig was a G5. if it's ram, maybe you can ask a friend of yours to swap his with yours just to see if that's the case, no matter the model it's a fast and easy thing to do...
Second thing, this is quite obvious but sometimes we overlock it: less stuff on desktop the better, more free disk space the better. the disk should be in a good state, always, partitioning the main hard drive can bring the performance down... better to use another disk - specially if we're talking access to samples here. do that test with a friend, you can get by with buying ram from another brand that isn't apple (that will always readily still you eheh) and run the verify disk thing (it's boring 'cause it takes a while to complete, but then you get a good report that shows you if there's any bad sectors and all)... watch out for that, I've had the nightmare of seeing my main disk dying last year, not a pretty story!
let us know how that turns out! cheers

As an Every-Man/DJ/Music enthusiast/40-something noob to the DAW production thing, I must confess that I was humbled when I first stepped to Live 8 early in 2011. Totall lost and confused. But I never gave up, and after alot of Youtube vids and pestering the guys at Guitar Center, I've made some headway. My background was all analog with MPC's, vinyl and CDJ turntables; Ableton has taken my enjoyment of music to a whole new level.
But in this post, I'm comparing sampling/chopping in Live and Logic Pro, which I also own. In short, the process to chop a song in logic requires slicing, pasting, moving, et al...like 2-4 steps. And the exs24 sampler in logic is not the easiest to deal with.
After an 45-60 mins of working with logic, i slid over to Live 8, and loaded a song, sliced it, chopped it, and was playing the sample in literally 8 minutes. Now, I'm not dissing logic; I'm sure its fine for those who love it. But, with sampling/slicing, session and arrangement views, effects, etc...Live is the most intuitive DAW i've used. Along w/ Logic Pro, I also own Maschine...which I'm quite fond of because it plays well w/ Live also.
Again, I am a Newbie...but this is my 2 cents. Ableton has made music more fun than ever.
Peace
Well, it's obvious that you didn't spend enough time learning Logic as you did for Live, if you did you would deffinetly know that there is shortcut (ctrl+e) that opens your previously sliced/chopped audio in exs24, that's it, but anyways this is thread about Logic X.
On topic, no go for me, the same engine with new awful GUI and new stuff that I'm not even excited about, absence of 32 bit bridge, no brainer.

yeah, but even though I'm very familiar with Logic, I do think that Ableton is really great and provides an easy and very fast way to manipulate samples on the fly: just think of what Skrillex (I know, not saying I love it eheh) does with it - that's a totally inside-the-box producer. It's easier to pitch up and down samples non destructively to, or apply a pitch envelope to samples and stuff like that...
So I give you that: I go the other way around, I know Logic much better then Ableton - which I'm really only starting to explore now with some collabs I have going. But I have the feeling you're right about this one. And I'm sure you're right about how it handles Maschine: it's the perfect marriage. That little thing... it's also growing on me, the GAS for it (nevermind)...
any of you guys know of cool plug-ins that could replace the midi-plug-ins in Logic X? I never noticed I'd might like it until I tried it. I mean an arp with plenty of features, chord memorizer, stuff like that. all of a sudden I don't like having to configure that on the "environment" window anymore. so any tips on that are most welcome to me! (maybe to a lot of people to )
does anyone here know if the new flex pitch converts audio to midi? I haven't tried to do it, I haven't even used it after I posted my "first impressions review" here as I've been really busy lately. but I'm curious if that's possible or not. used the one that comes with Ableton for a mix I'm working on (by someone else) and it's amazing: I was replacing some things that didn't sound to good with other sounds on the fly, pretty handy!

To someone who has never used Studio One can you explain what are the advantages of using it over Logic or any other DAW for that matter?

First off Studio One also has disadvantages over other DAWs and my comment regarding Logic was just fun, ok?
I simply couldn't hesitate since he wrote "out":)
But it also has some unique features I love e.g:
Assigning Knobs Each Windows has its own Automation Panel right above the Plugin Window,
Assigning Knobs is as easy as tweaking the hardware controller.
For me it has the easiest assigning procedure of any other DAWs out there.
You also have the ability to define global knobs or temporary mappings, very nice.
But one of the most loved feature is:
The Browser You can Drag complete Channels inclusive Instruments and Effects to the Browser and pre-listen it in the browser.
Restoring the whole channel is that easy as well, see:
http://screencast.com/t/fv5xf9djf
This lets me create patches with example phrases and store them completely in the browser.
Than while producing i just can browse through my presets, pre-build example sequences which contain effects, dynamics, EQ automation.
