interested to know peoples thoughts on planning a live set. Im working towards my first live this october and am starting to think about how i am going to structure it.

DJsets often have alot of twists and turns in terms of set structure but ive noticed many live sets seem to follow a pattern of gradually rising in intensity in a ramp like fashion, the last track being a monster.

i write prog (135 dancey stuff to slower 130bpm afternoony stuff) and am playing with the idea of a liveset that ramps down into the 130 stuff with the first half of it being more intense....sort of how i would structure a proggy djset that was going from morning into afternoon.

i am worried this might not work as well in a live context though, running against peoples general expectation of a climactic finish.

I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas on how you guys structure your live sets. do you plan them out as if they were a dj set, taking in to account the time of day you are playing? or do you base them around the music you have to work with?

cheers

have a nice day

I usually make my liveset start of with the less weird stuff and work it's way through weirdness, with the tracks becoming more and more aggressive. Also, you may concider raising the bpm by 1 in your live versions of the tracks. I tried this (raised from 138 to 139) and it made a huge difference.           *In AjmaGard We Trust*

u can raise the bpm slowly in the breakdown of the tracks where no beats/kick/bassline are playing u can do that in 5-6 tracks and finnaly have the bpm raised about 4-5bpm to get that extra speed for some more dancy feeling!

I think that a little variety can go a long way. When you are playing live, I think it's actually good to break things down & build them up again, like a 2nd onslaught. This type of pattern also gives way to mixing things up, in case you want to have a different sound or feel. Slower doesn't always mean less aggressive.

If your going for a prog sound, I would suggest perhaps not ramping down totally, but perhaps pushing it back up, essentially breaking your set into 3rd. I think with prog sound, you need to push it upwards a little more than pull back, since the prog sound has a steady consistency in structure. Just an idea that I used frequently when spinning prog house.

That is a tough one man, because you cant just restructure a live set according to the mood the way you can with a dj set. I agree with dharma, it might be cool to start a little harder to grab peoples attention, bring it down into the groove, then build back up. And having a nice atmospheric ambient intro/outro sequence will help fade between the djs before and after your set regardless of what they are playing.

freakin loved "spiral tree" man, cant wait to hear some more from you, interested to hear the slower tunes. best of luck with the live set.

thanks for the comments guys, after having a bit of a play around with a layout last night i definately think you are on to it in terms of starting strong(ish) moving into some cruisier stuff and ramping it back up, if think that will work alot better.
