I still remember Posford's set at the the second Samothraki festival. Crash *boing* crash...
Anyway, I reckon on average a Mac will be more stable for a live set. Not because the hardware is any better (these days it is just an Intel PC) but because it is less likely there will be a conflict between different pieces of hardware.
The PC world is great because you have so much choice but it also means that you can more easily get conflicts. Also, it is more likely that you have cheap components or memory. Either because someone built their own system without doing proper research or decided to go for a cheaper option or because the PC/laptop manufacturer went for the cheaper option.
Another issue is that most virii and malware is written for Windows. Not because windows is inherantly flawed or anything like that simply but because the authors of this crap will want to write something that affects as many people as possible and that means Windows.
There is also much much more free software available for Windows. Some of that software is coded by amateurs that might not have as much knowledge and experience or missed a few details when implementing their tools.
Freedom comes at a price...
I always build my own PCs and do alot of research on the components that I will include in my systems. So far things are running smoothly.
Having said that, I don't expect the average user (without an IT background) to do the same research and have the same knowledge and experience.
So the bottom line is that a Mac is probably more stable for a live act unless you are a bit of a geek that can build, setup and run a custom built PC without any problems.

I also had some bad experiences in the past, with laptop on the stage, so i bought a profy HD Recorder to use it for live sets. Since than there was no more problems. No crushes, no low latency or CPU problems, and no need for back-up Cd anymore.
  NEW ALBUM OUT SOON !!!

Look, we all know it needs to be decent.
A proper Pentium Chip...(No Celeron budget shyte) and a decent amount of RAM.
A decent Graphics card can only help too.
Now if you bought QUALITY....it should be a sterdy lil beast.
Now....KEEP IT FOR LIVE ACTS.
Don;t surf the net with it...don;t install games....don;t install Office for you Mum to use.
Keep it for LIVE.
Like a racer keeps his special car for racing only!
In this way you should have the least hassles.
If you need to use your machine for all of the above....
Just like a car, a PC needs a service every now and then.
A Disk cleanup, clearing the Temp files and temp internet files.
A Defrag if needed.
Leave enough space ALWAYS for you page file.
If you stick to these rules....you should not have problems.
Unless you bought a DUD....but that either bad luck....or karma biting ya!
U best know what you doing.

@ tsabeat
Yeah had stabillity issues with logic aswell on the mac
For producing i switched to cubase because of that
But live runs like a charm, and i dont even have to use an external soundcard if i dont want cause the internal soundcard runs with really low latency and the quality is great
I use one only for routing the percussion loops to differnt channels on the mixer
Anyway, i could recommend it to anyone
A rocksolid setup with a fancy glowing apple in the nighttime |

We (TimeDrained) Played live at the Synergy Prog gathering In london a few weeks ago and halfway through the set our laptop suddenly said "low battery" even though we had it plugged in their power thing... We paniced and then the laptop turned off...
Pretty much our worst nightmare, but people just used the opportunity to get drinks, freash air etc. some sat down on the floor and relaxed -most, including us, were laughing/smiling at the whole thing.
apparently a cord had melted or something and after we got a new one everything worked and we finished the set... i believe the brakdown lasted 5-10min. :s

time gate 06 in switzerland, 1000+ people in the dancefloor.
it's not really my laptop that crashed, but the whole electricity sector around with the main mixer.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 has never crashed in two years. I can't bring that thing down, no matter what I do. SX 3.1, as well as internet, office everything. It's magic.

yes I also have Dell (Inspiron 6400) & it never crashed.
I'm using 2 OS's. First a Ubuntu Linux for work&school and a windows just for sounding (no windows updates, no internet, nothing just music tools)...
last weekend i had 2 electrical power outage's at the party, but with abelton live i had no problems to just reactivate the soundcard-driver. in cubase i had to restart the whole programm/set. |

We use a mac for live acts and had it crash a few times. Figured out that it was a vibration problem. We were using the internal HD and I guess the vibration made the disk jump so we changed, and put our tracks on an external HD and placed it on some foam(packing type) since then, have not had any problems.... Pretty ghetto but it works.

pc and no mid-set crashes yet. i always have a backup CD with me.
i did have a more 'analogue' crash tho... when one of the promoters crashed into my violin and broke it during my set! i picked it up to play and the poor thing fell apart in my hands

ok guys... this must sound crazy... and maibe a shame, ...but I've never, ever used backup cds with the live set.
I symply allways trusted my asus laptop. Of corse we have to tweak windows, that's the way it is...
But I also have this laptop only for lives... don't have office, net stuff, or anything like that... I just have the hardware drivers, logic 5.1.3, wavelab, a bunch of vst's, and some windows teaking, nothing else. Well, I was forgeting the soundcard RME Multiface, this one changed my life, lol). As far as I remember, my PC crashed only once, 'cause of the heat. We had 2 hours live-set in the morning, and without notice the sun came up and almost fried the PC, so it crashed. 5min later was rocking again (in the shadow, lol). By the time I bought this laptop (asus L3800S) a mac would cost me doubble price, at least here in portugal.
Anyways, like someone already sayd, if you keep your pc clean, only for lives and with the right tweaks on windows, theres no reason for him to crash...
