Why would i get paid more for running my tracks straight from a laptop, instead of beatmixing them with cd's? Seems like your actually doing less using the laptop... |

very good question
this has been a hot topic on our forum as well, why pay a live act up to 2000$ for playing a portable and a nordlead when you can have 3-4 international dj's for the same price ... (or the live act as dj set for half the price) ....
i think live acts appeal to people, but a lot of those people get dissapointed when they see an artists staticly nodding his head while watching the cubase mixing table... did i pay 15 euro's entrance to see this guy play "solitaire" ? -stupid joke we make when we see a lice act play this way-
in belgium there are not that many big dj names playing right now it's just one live act after another, and they're not making the parties any cheaper

sure live can be wicked one done properly, but i know of people who just play a pre-arranged set from logic and little if anything else...seems a bit pointless. I guess 24bit is one reason why its worth it. |

if the soundsystem is good enough to reach this quality level....
what we have in belgium now (Lani, smooze and sanka) play as much live as humanly possible, it's amazing what they do this way!

Maybe because were made to think Live is a harder more complex skill and beatmixing is just playing someone else's music. Personally some of the best sets i've heard are both live and Dj. This way the artist incorperates a bit of his/her creativity like extra melodies and such while making an intresting mix with CD/Vynil.
  Progressive, Full-on? Its all good <;} |

exactly. this comes from the past. this is not necessarily true when an artist beatmatches his/her own music. i make entire sets of music that i only play once off cd. this is more effort/work/creativity than an artist just slapping some of his/her songs as audiofiles in their sequencer and hitting play. Usually the synth on the side is just for white noise or spacey pads or whooshy stuff. when well used it can certainly add to the mix, but i think we can safely say that the only reason this fake live stuff sells as live is due to ignorance on the part of the crowd as to how this music is actually made. (as in "that guy is making this music live! see him with all that gear?")
now, this is the answer to the question. will this remain the situation forever? probably not.
so we should all milk it and milk it good while it lasts! |

personally i prefer dj sets. but that's just because there is no REAL live there (maybe except blt-makov, which i sure would love to catch sometime). we discussed this some time ago at the trance section. most "lives" are just premade stuff and rarely - a live synth part, which isn't that incredible from my point of view.

Hey tim, your right about mixing being more then just letting the tracks play on the laptop. But one thing is: U take some time mixing the tracks in logic also bro so maybe thats some work at least. My opinion is everyone should play something live, because the only live thing when u let the laptop run is the person behind it. I always play live percussion and synth cos i know people freak out when they see that its really live. Just my opinion!
