without getting into the whats live whats not , just share your setup , and maybe add your dream setup...

today i use mixmeister on the laptop to mix my tracks (could done on ableton or cds as well) , adding 1 lead / fx channel from synth.
this days taking it easy , usualy with the kaossilator , sometimes from latop vst , and when i feel like giving abit more i might ask for nordlead i bring my midi lines from home and make preset-on-the-fly as i know this synth inside out.
kinda half way only , but atleast i control the tracks order like djs can , while have some options to make the extra thing , wich is the real fun.

also working on my dream set-up , ableton live session with full 4 channels open to control seperatly , full 'scenes' and 'folowup' options with drumloops and effects and midilines for adding on-the-fly while can mute the actual track sounds and maybe play with the synth sounds. something pritty similar to tom cosm or realit pixie set up. im also abit of controllers freak , i like em weird and funny and unusual.

even more dream , abit unreal , would be full midi live , with only synths playing , as it was 15 years ago!
it require alot of equipment and preparation that is not being done in trance parties so probably better to just end up with laptop that is almost the same as this hole crazy stage thing. (i talk about even basic sound check and proper mixer is not always there , so ask for 10 synths or deal with flying with that is probably impossible in this size of scene)

+1
for now Im gettin along with virus, noah and micron, all live synths and two of them can be used as soundcards.. If one day I get receptor so I can box rest of VSTs I use that would be dream setup and I wouldnt need laptop at all..
for mixing tracks serato and alesis air synth, just in case I need to add some sugar on top to spice things up..           http://www.facebook.com/xrayzproductions

Wouldn`t go for the receptor..

i mean i do not know the new one but we had a lot of hassles at my old workingplace with this machines..

I think i got all i need for live sessions..a good interface, an axiom 49 to trigger something and maybe i will use the nocturn, but i`m not quite sure about..

wouldn`t take my Ti to a live performance i guess..even tho i need some more music to actualy think about it..

thought about just creating several cool 8 or 16 bar patterns and bounce them out in 4 groups to use in ableton live..midi learn those patterns on my keyboard and trigger them when i feel like, otherwise i would perform fx on that patterns or something..rather than dj`n whole tracks after another..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

ableton:
- 2 masterbusses with 4 channels each (sub, drums, hihat, sounds) = 8 channels. loops only.
- tweakable bus effects, a lot of it.
- no arrangement. just start the loop you want now (you need to know them all, thats the hardes part)
- limiter on each masterbus.

virus b:
- software monitoring, sidechained.
- recording chain into a tube amp
- midi loops from ableton, with automatic programm change (love it!)
- and then tweak the selected patch into something you dont know before as the loop goes (thats the cool "random" thing)
- the 2 softknobs on the virus trigger delay and reverb in ableton on the virus (channel). works smart.

analog mixer:
- 2 audiobusses (with the 4 channels each + virus) for some dj feel on the mixer.

- we are 2 people.

it took a while until we understood that a pre-arrange in ableton does not make much sense, when we want to be as much spontaneous as possible. we just collect some clusters like loops from the same track near to each other.
the other thing we needed to understand was, that a liveact does not mean that your tracks sound like in the studio, especially some over-edited breaks is something you cant reproduce live with loop playing. so breaks are mainly very cutty and the rest is done by the midi-controlled delay-based fx-chains.

building the whole concept took about 6 whole day sessions, a lot of clicking-work and a lot brainstorm.

Mac Book Pro,
Roland TB-303 (midified)
Behringer BCF-2000
RME Fireface 400
Cubase 4

BCF-2000 is being used to control FX and Faders in cubase. With the faders I usually control the level of track in loops, so I can fade them in/out whenever I want.. I'll probably replace the behringer with one of that tiny korg controllers           Most of my music for you to download at:

1 ableton sampler with kick drum
1 ableton sampler with sampled bass note hit from ABL
(the midi is set up to where the midi is triggered in the kick drum channel and is also sent to the bassline from the kick channel)
1 Audio Channel contain drumloops, some from actual tracks, some just thrown in.
1 Impulse kit with basic drum hits such as open and closed hi hat, and snare running some slightly simple midi patterns.
3 Audio channels for synth sounds separated into these categories: Ask/Answer, Heavy Lead, Weird
(These contain audio clips from tracks, or from goof around sound design sessions)Also can run some effect chains, mainly for switching through gating patterns of a trance gate on the weird channel

1 Audio Channel for Samples and Mashups. (This is where I use audio I didn't make for nice layering stuff or interesting mashups or transitions) This has several effect chains that I can select with a midi knob to add extra weirdness to it.

1 Audio Channel for Whooshes (reverses and swells etc just to help round out the phrasing feeling for scenes and parts.)

1 VST synth (currently Synth 1, but soon to be Surge, and several fx's that I automate on and off)

4 bus channels for submixing (kik bass, drums, synths, and sum)

2 fx busses (Dly, rvb)

2 Audio channels for full tracks to be able to play full tracks and take some of the processor load off. (This will eventually become just Audio input channels for Torq)

Midi Controllers:
Korg Nano Kontrol for individual channel level control and control over a bunch of the main automation.
M-Audio O2 Keyboard controller: Used for clip and scene triggering, as well as playing the synth channel and controlling parameters on that.

I intend on getting the rest of the Korg Nano series so I can use the nano keyboard to trigger clips and full scenes and I can use the drum pads to trigger drum hits on the impulse kit as well as using the xy pad for certain effects. I also intend on getting a small hardware synth to jam out on more and use less processor for that, however I am definitely planning on getting a new laptop hopefully in the not too distant future as mine is a single core toshiba.. 2.8 with 2Gb ram... Once I upgrade to a dual core, I can actually use more effects and a more complicated synth.

Macbook Pro > Ableton Live

MOTU Ultralite > MIDI Out > Nord Lead 2x
MIDI IN > Faderfox LC2

External FX Inserts > Korg Kaoss Pad
> Alesis Midiverb

And my dream is also to play again like old times! Without laptop and with a groovebox or drum machine, hehe! But too lazy to do it with laptop available!
