How about having your "not live" stems all premixed on CD, and playing all your live stuff over that from your laptop?
I imagine you could have all your effects, VSTis, Midi tracks etc for your set in one FL session if working this way. |

If you want to you can also make a separate live set for each one of your tracks and save them all into the same folder. Then you can have that folder showing in your browser on the left, and you can open up each of those live sets from within your current live set and drag and drop things over into your current set... tracks, groups of tracks, individual clips, etc.
Also something to consider, so you don't have to load up separate sets every time.

I've found that dragging lots of groups and stuff like that into my current project takes up a lot of CPU and may even cause the currently playing audio to drop out...does that happen to you?
Mind you I'm on a 4 year old frankenstein-monster desktop...might be the reason

It depends on how much stuff is in the channel I'm importing. Doing it by on the clip level doesn't cause problems with me, and I already have all the instruments/FX I use in my ableton tracks loaded into my live set (in the manner described in my above suggestion) and all labeled, so a lot of that CPU work is taken care of for me ahead of time.
(Importing channels from the browser isn't something I normally do in my lives, though. I was just offering it as an alternative suggestion to loading up each track individually.) |

If you set up all your tracks using the same format for live set use (audio channels the same, midi, etc. you can drag one channel within another channel and it will just drop the contents without generating a new channel. The actual new channel generation is what hogs the CPU, but dropping one channel into another will simply drop the clips etc. (assuming you already have content such as a dummy clip in the current channel already, or both channels are blank when you drop one into the other.)
For example, you can set up (x) number of stem tracks and then mix each track's audio down to stems, then start with a live set of empty audio tracks and just drop the audio tracks from your browser sets into your current set and it will not hog CPU when doing so.

why not devise a new project file for all of your tracks in ableton with scene changes doing your bpm /time signature/etc switches?

I performed with a band as a dj, and had all their song "stems" kick/bass/back vocals/leads/effects/etc... all mapped out on individual tracks and in scenes with bpms.
I did this all in ableton live with a launchpad and a novation x-station.
Try this approach, it worked for me.
