hello dudes.
i am preparing myself to play live and i am not sure about the main-way i should go.
first plan:
buy some hardware recording system (MPC-3000 for example) and play the lines and tracks with some additional samples and structures completly with this hardware tool by triggering the sequences.
Anyone here knows the mpc-3000 for such a use, or any better hardware?
second plan:
buy a labtop-system with ableton live, triggering it with an extern hardware-controller or masterkeyboard, maybe different outputs on a little additional 6 to 8 track mixer.
the sum of any components should allow myself to carry them on my own. this means: not too heavy, not too many.
i am realy thankfull and open minded for good solutions and ideas. |

the problem is that most of the live-acts out there are not "live" at all. |

midi controller or synth

The way i do it is:
Connect my pc and the pc of a friend. One pc for the sequencing and the other for vsts.
We use cubase, various vsts-h/w synths and battery as a sampler ..sometimes flstudio.
So we've got kick-bass-drums written down on cubase and we use one midi keyboard-controller for playing melodies-tunes live and another one for playing samples from battery-tweaking fx-filters...
works out fine and it gives out a real live feeling

Most live-acts aren't live: it's a way of stealing back the money from the people who copied their cd's Ghe ghe ghe... But anyway... i would definately go for the Laptop/ Ableton live option or upgrade to Cubase SX 3 when it's out (if the time allows it). |

Well i wouldnt call it stealing but its true, its what artists live of more than their releases so i guess its good. but the sound of the analog outputs at 24 bits and trough a mackie its much better than some cd.. so i would go definetely for the ableton live 4.. i have it and it sure does the job!! what a great tool.. |

Here is one possibility:
A laptop with Live 4, some small sound source like a micro modular (easy to carry arround), a controler keyboard. Get the party organiser to rent/borrow a small mixer and a stereo delay effect. (And a limiter to spare people's ears!)
Prepare loops and sounds for triggering in Live. Control Live and the micromodular with your controler keyboard and play with the sends to the delay unit.
That is allready more live than most acts ... |

So far, I have been running Ableton Live 4 and an Oxygen 8 keyboard. Because most of my music isn't released, I have all my tracks perfectly mixed and I have a bunch of drum loops and synth loops (in audio) assigned to keys on the keyboard. I also pick a couple of my favorite vsts that I can make some good sounds with and run those in real time. Live 4 can also be ran like a production mixer as long as your sound card can keep up, so you can avoid that extra gear. I have a Firewire 410 so if I wanted the instruments to come out of a different channel, I could.
Live can really make a difference between the artists that just "press play" and those that really do it live...

We use Traktor to play mixes, and I have Korg Legacy Cell running on the same laptop (controlled by an Evolution MK-225C keyboard). Steve plays a Korg Karma and SH101 (which I also dabble on); Ryo and I play percussion on a darbhuka and he also uses a Roland Handsonic pad. Ramsay uses Live on a laptop to add in extra samples and noises, controlled by an Oxygen 8. I take an Alesis MIDIverb with me, and we rely on the promoter to provide a mixer. If we're playing abroad we also need the promoter to provide the Karma and SH101, or similar keyboards.
I'm trying to get round to using Live rather than Traktor as it would mean much more flexibility with the tracks, but the way I want to do it means a lot of work on each track, bouncing down stems, and to be honest I'd rather work on new material than dig out all my old SX and VST archives! Gotta be done sometime though.
I guess in one sense we do just 'press play'... but then you've got 4 people all playing instruments over the top, improvising and jamming new riffs and sounds, so it's a little more than that.

Wisely said .
I would recommend to buy good laptop running with Abelton + Midi controller , there is much more flexebility on it than on recording device + hardware for one man. |

I'm using two yamaha rs7000's and a dj mixer. If your still interested in going the hardware route, definetly check out the 7000.
Been to livepa.org? Excellent site, esp. if your into hardware, but also live pa's in general (plenty of ableton discussion as well). I'd recomend starting at the last page & working forward, lots of good advice throughout. |
