Live performance workflow?

During Menog's set at a party last night, I was standing there the most of his set trying to figure out his workflow. His set really seemed like one, seamless track. I noticed the laptop, mixer and hardware controllers/synth on stage and I was wondering how plausible an idea it would be for one to bounce all their tracks - sans leads (or other elements) down to audio, then create a segue from that backing, essentially keeping the backing of a full set perfectly mixed and seamless and then playing all the leads and other synth-tasks in real-time over that backing playback?
I'm not sure how a much of a live performance one could achieve if they had to open a new project in their DAW everytime they were going to perform a new song, the best way I could see that method working out is first playing a track fully in the sequencer, using a controller to tweak some elements, then mixing to a backing of the next track playing through a CDJ and using a synth/controller to play the leads over that while opening a new song/project in your DAW before mixing back to that source...If that makes sense. I'm guessing the former method would be easier...Not entirely real-time, but enough to be considered a live act.
What workflow would you guys use when performing live?
At the moment, I'm working on a four track demo that I'd like to start performing at house parties in a half-live/half-DJ kind of set. My workflow would be to play my own tracks live straight off my DAW then mix to another artist's track in a CDJ while I get everything ready for my next track in my DAW. Effectively having my DAW connected to one channel of a mixer and a CDJ connected to another.

The first method you suggested, thats not a bad way of doing it and its what a lot of artists do - playing there deadboard to an already mixed set on there laptop.
Theres quite a nice hands on method where while making your track, bounce each part of the mix (kick&bass, synth lines, percussion, etc) into separate parts and bring them back into into cubase or whatever you're using.
Do this for each track you are going to play and mix them in before hand. Now, when playing a live set, you can tweak each individual part of the song by using the vsts and your keyboard like changing the bit-depth of a synth or whatever while the rest of the track remains untouched. If you want to you could load different vsts live, although it would be a mission to assign the controllers for all of them.
I think doing this and still jamming a melody on keyboard is about as live as you can get without any proper hardware or synthesizers. If you don't have a keyboard, well ... i cant see anyone gaining stardom by clicking there mouse buttons furiously or pressing hotkeys as if they were the "Sounds pumping" button.

Both your methods would work perfectly, i'd just be worried about sessions opening and closing on your DAW. More things happening = more room to mess things up. Thats was my experience anyway.

And make some good "logistics"... I mean... U can have many things to do, but if u don´t practice and order the things in your head, it´s pretty hard to remember at the stage what u need to do.

I would do it like rubix cube said, bouncing everything down solo from all tracks, then open a new project and reconstruct everything there from the solo wavs of all tracks...mix that already in the project file (you can do great mixes when u got everything solo, like not just removing the whole bass freqs of a track while mixing, but removing the whole bass at the end of the track and replace it with the one from the next track and so on...this way everything else leaves untouched frequency-wise).
then just leave some leads or what u want to play out of each track and play them over the set at the right time or make some new sounds that arent in the track before to play live (thats where sms words come in the process)

suppose u could do that, suppose you could pre-compile the whole set, and just mimic minor stuff, though it will take away whole "improv" and "reacting to people" thing. dunno.
i guess when it comes to live PA, DAWs must have limitations. although my personal weapon of choice is indeed ableton live (not to sound like endorsment), just plug few controllers, synths, decent audio interface with multi ins/outs, dj mixer and go nuts.
