So, i've started to build my first ethnic percussion set with congas, djembes, bongos etc... Gonna play with chillout-dj on parties.

I have done some testing with Apogee Duet and mics: AKG Dynamic mic (bottom, bass), Audio Technica condenser mic (tone, slap) and Zoom H4 via usb (overhead+reverb, delay)

I have still few questions for people who play or are mixing sound live...

1. Can i use condenser mics live?

2. What kind of mixer should i get? (do i need pre's)

3. Is there any cheap multifx with pedal that could be used with percs, lot's of guitar-stuff but are dem working properly and do u think it's wise to use fx on live perc?

4. I think i will be using Beyer Dt-770M cans when playing so i can hear what i'm doing. Uncool?

You can use condenser mic´s live, but it can be more tricky depending on the pickup pattern of the mic and the higher sensitivity they normally have. A cardioid or super cardioid pattern would be preferable so as to mostly pick up what is in front of the mic and not everything else. Better and more appropriate would be to use a dynamic mic, and on percussion a good old shure sm57 is hard to beat (hard to get to feed, very rugged and easy to work with plus not so expensive)

A mixer is a plus because you have individual gain and mix options for your sources and you cannot always trust that appropriate gear is available at gigs. Additionally using your own means you can always keep it close at hand and have a setup you know and trust.

when it comes to multi efx there is truly a mad bunch of stuff out there, both studio and instrument stuff. My mind bubbles over thinking of all the fun that can be had, so i cannot give you any great advice other than if it sounds good it is good!

Using headphones is not uncool! In the absence of proper monitoring on stage (also quite normal) it is preferable to have a dependable way of hearing what you are playing and here headphones and your own personal monitor mix is a good way of getting around that. Nothing is more sucky than hearing a live musician being a quarter beat behind or in front purely because of the lack of monitoring on stage. Incidentally it sucks for the musician too.           Mastering available here:

Ok thx monno for your answer. Surely i'm going to get one sm57 and look out for some nice fx.

What comes to mixer, i totally agree with u. Since i've played for many years live djembe and have really suffered because of missing inputs, wrong mics, levels etc. so now i'm doing my own setup and just plug and play (i hope)

Cheers!

I now have sm57, very nice sound though it has to be kinda far from the head of a drum, played last weekend live at a local bar and was very fun! + I was wasted

Next thing i'm going to invest to is the mixer. I have looked Allen&Health zed10-fx and i think it's quite nice for my purposes.

Btw, here's something i recorded few days back at my home :

little update: I now have A&H Zed 10Fx and two sm57's.

And of course we have a "live-thingie" in two days at a local nightclub. -One djembe, One darbuka and DJ.
I'm going to use headphones and my friend (other player) won't.
I would like to make some pre-settings and tweaking before soundcheck, so.. Any routing suggestions?

edit: Forgot to say that the DJ has own mixer what is connected to speakers.          Jonesy
