hey, my friend wants me to do a live set for a party of his. I am going to be bringing my desktop because I dont have a laptop yet, but I would like advice as to what else I should bring. He has a great sound system, and I want to get some practice as if it were a bigger venue. What kind of gear should I bring? He is supplying me with a mackie 24 * 8 mixer. Should I bring preamps? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, are you using any hardware for any of your tracks? Drag one or two synths that you use a lot and maybe a drum machine if you use one of those, or just bring your computer with it's soundcard and use software instruments... Don't bring anything that you aren't planning on using. Having buttloads of gear on stage just for show would be pretty lame IYAM. You also have to take into consideration setup time and having to carry all that stuff from your car to the venue and whatnot.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Good points mubali. The question you should ask yourself, salvia, is what will you use. And no you don't need preamps. The Mackie has preamps allready.

Exactly, what gear do you use? I recomend that you check out Abelton Live. Just that program and a midi controller is very powerful.           ________________________

Having a lot of equipment on stage is kind of cool.. even if your ont using it.. looks rather impressive...

you can always connect them to the Mackie and play live on top of ANYTHING if you want... hehe           https://www.djjeto.com

Thanks for all the above. I really appreciate the input.

Well, I use a Nord Lead 3, a virus ti desktop, jv-80, and sh-101. Also the Korg EMX-1. I usually use the jv-80 as a controller, but with the sh-101 I dont know what to do with it live. I dont have any cv - midi converters. I usually just record the audio direct from it.

Is it necessary to have some notebook to make live PA? I know everybody uses one today, but I cannot buy it now. I have two MMT8 Alesis sequencer, MC505 and Korg ER-1. I could use them for sequencing, isn't it?
I wouldn't like to take my synths for live (Supernova2, Prophecy, Microwave XT etc.), so I was thinking to buy a hardware sampler.
Somebody uses ADAT?
A friend of mine uses a NL2 rack, JP8000, Mackie and a Mac Powerbook. His live PA is great and he's already played with Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Sub6 in Brazil. Powerbook would be amazing for me...

Salvia: The SH-101 can be used for rythmical FX sounds. That was one of the synths Dennis from HuxFlux used when he played live for us. He is very fast with that synth so he could easily change the sounds while he was playing. Wether it is of any use to you really depends on you and what fits with your music.

Just bring stuff that you are sure you are going to use. Taking other stuff means dragging it along with the risk of it getting damaged.

sonik_akb: You don't _need_ a laptop. It is just easy and practicle. If you have programmable sequencers that you can work well with, that should be fine. A hardware sampler is certainly nice to have. You can have loops in there playing along or ready to trigger from a keyboard.

It also depends on the music you make. If you have fast 16th note bassline, I would have those sampled in loops so that they are nice and tight. If you make slower, more funky/groovy music, things don't need to be as tight.
