in india? how is india different from any other place?
anyway, my understandings for a live set goes something like this, the synthesis of the sounds is done the spot, the artist first must have his own music to make for example a 2 hour live set, that means he must have about 15-20 tracks of his own, now since he has made these tracks, he knows the ins and out of the different sounds used,he will produce or synthesize the sounds or tracks there and then,on the spot(through experience and knowledge),using his equpiment, in a live set he will improvise ( maybe or should according to the floor response he gets and adjust accordingly) for example, that particular night the crowd set/vibe induces a particular bass response, so he can take cues from the floor, or he can do his own thing, genrealy a live set consists of well rehearsed minute changes in his tracks, by adding prompto sounds on impulse,by using his different gadgets, like a sampler, or a synth, or a midi etc but he can also do a complete improvised set there and then ( that can only happen when he has lots of experience with his equipment and various sounds he can produce at any instant, his openess to responses from his surroundings, or any setup) he may use other artists equpiment(ofcourse he must know how to use it, the proper artists know all the latest gadgets available in the market), using the other artists setup to create his own synthesis on the spot like a freestlye remix, either through experience, or complete transformational break through there and then generally through channelling from the rich source. dj sets r mostly well rehearsed, and prepared well in advance, but there is no sound synthesis on the spot, the tracks r just mixed live, but some ppl do improvise, some just do their own thing which they have planned well in advance.
i cant say i know much about this, as i am still learning, but this is my perspective, i'd like to hear what the others got to say or do in their live sets.

90% ableton live sets are almost fake. The Artist just simply launches his own tracks from the hard drive and just press the Play button. Artists who use Cubase play live by launching different VSTs are the real thing. Eskimo does not even launches clips but only a single file. More than an artist he is a performer on the console. It will be much better if you can check out his videos on you tube. Once the Play button is pressed there is no tension at all and only performance ahead...hahahaha

psykovsky dj set is better than any 'Live' around.
its a shame to see all ur influences and big names to go 'press a button' and party oN.
But it actually makes no difference to 90% of the people on the floor. as long as the music is good...           ------------------------------

Totally agree with Jigar bro. At the end of the day wotever sounds good is acceptable. However Irony here is artists like Eskimo charge exactly double the amount for thier so called LIVE sets(premixed single file) than the DJ set. That even avoids the trouble of beatmatching if they play DJ sets. Best thing is just concentrate on any Eskimo, Dali etc and all video and you will see that the volume of the hardware synth is zero but still full power fake twisting knobs on the console. I came across one Dali video where here fake act didnt even sync....thats really funny..Thats why Psykovsky DJ set is anytime bettter than fake Live sets..Killer psy irony.lol

+1 ..! The only real live I ever saw that too a proper LIVE was GMS way back in 2001 .. most of them are semi- live cause the cost of getting the equipment and gear is a bit hefty.. and for people I guess the muzik played just matters keep boUncing people !

here is one oldskool nice example of a live set video
playing live is it man,it dont get any better than that for the artist, its his freedom of expression, and the states he induces or brings out of the listners or dancers, he may suddenly break from a ripping 150 bpm track , to a sudden ambience, rising or rasing the totally focused crowd, with his sound and then dropping the 150 back in, keeping the dancers on that raised state, how the fuk is that shit explainable, cant explain that shit, no words to explain, its unexplainable, any indian artists record any of their live sets?i love to hear!
peace

Lets not forget that sphongle sets are also 100% Live. They dont use any software at all. Bassline through bass guitar. Kicks, snares and hats from e-Drums and leads from Nord lead 2X. But that almost impossible for a single person to manage.

Silent Horror... agree with you....

From the above what I understand is that ... "LIVE"... should include, instruments like string instruments, drum kits, synths.. and many more...... while "DJ SETS" is only a laptop / PC and a basic mixer.

My point is.... 99.99% of the times in India, atleast in Bombay I come across flyers... which claim live acts.. however the gigs never contain artists playing live instruments...

Hi
Its never gonna be possible to play 100 % live. God gave us only 2 hands and sometimes there are so many layers playing together it would not be possible without Software.
There are a few projects who make a lot of effort though.. since most people feel a live act is nothin different from a dj set.
Son Kite and Colin Odd et al are two projects that play a lot of live instruments in their performances .. For me thats a real live set.. other artists like keroscene club psykovsky alien mental .. let me just say they are a lot of 8 beat loops in the mix...

barring the mixes synthisizers and phasers has any one seen a live act use additonal hardware?

Peace
