he has a goddamn good point tho. this scene is and should remain about the music, first and foremost.
but, with the amount of semi- fake live acts, i fail to see why we're all "omg, someone is only tweaking cutoff! it's not totally live!!!"
it's all subjective.... long as we all have a good time, the music is kickin and the vibes are good.
as long as the artists are tryin their best, it's live enough for me.
when someone in my area will join with me and start a real Psyband, i'll do live then. until then, i'll still do my 8 bar loops and play my leads live. |

wil: what's you're idea of a true liveset??
couple years back i caught rastaliens live at Gaian mind, and they bounced between live track to dj track, and it completely blew me away. they were up there having fun and smoking and dancing, and they made it rain and lighting and such.
great night.
i'm all about honest, live preformance, but with detail oriented edm, you know as well as i do that it's tough as shit!

Hm....there are obviously many ways to do a live set all the way from pressing play on a pre-mixed set to making everything 100% live in the moment.
I don't think 100% live psy is possible as we are all used to it with its many layers. That being said, there are a lot of tools to make cool shit in a live enough fashion for me.
Like....having a bunch of synth patches that have 8 really good macro knobs on them for tweaking with the APC and feed MIDI into them and tweak them live. That would be pretty cool...or Kaossilator style touch interfaces to create new sounds in that moment, or intelligent use of send FX for long feedback loops etc...
or drum pads, or keyboards, or guitars, or any instrument or device that allows you to make something new and unique in that moment. That's pretty much it - there are many ways to get there but not many people do it.
And @ "this scene is and should remain about the music" - how is a live set detracting from or not about the music? It's about musicians creating shit that you wouldn't be able to hear if you bought their album! new sound!
So much potential!

Most probably i'm going to go live someday, thats a goal of mine. And i must have to say, i havent read the whole thread yet, about this.
But what i do know is that if theres a possibility for playing a synth live one should really go for it.
Guitars, any string or even piano if thats in your intro of the song. Live instruments is really making a good show
Not just put it on and fake tweaking the knobs.

why u need to make music on the fly??
ppl try to compare psytrance performers with live bands...but forget also bands don´t DO music on stage..they play your instruments...all phrases and timbres are pre-maded...and just a bit of improvisation sometimes...
Ok, some guys don't do nothing except hit the play, all of us know this...its a old discussion...I agree that have many "poor" liveacts today...but I would like if ppl can stop compare psytrance performers with live bands...its totaly different imo...

wil: i was agreeing with you about the music being number one priority, and that live sets do indeed enhance the music, through the effect of making it suit to crowds energy better.
i've started a new live project with a friend, we'll post some results sooner or later.
viva la live! |

@ dreadieg - I know you were man, I miss Gaian Mind :\
@ psychowave - what? I am confused by your post. Bands don't do music? People playing instruments together as one unit isn't music? Does not compute
There is nothing wrong with not being live, but that does not diminish the power of a live performance.

I think that the artist should add a live element to act, when possible...
for example, Melicia tracks had girl vocals, and she singed live with them, nice.

For me trance is spiritual and about pure honest vibes.
If you are honest and pure, why on earth would you fake live tweaking? Those who fake it are putting a show that will not enlighten anyone (nor themselves).
For me spirituality in trance comes from the people, the music, the connection between the musician and the dancers and the connections between the dancers themselves.
Good music will always have its power to enlighten and make people happy, and good people will always be good to be around.
But can the trance dance experience be even fuller and special? I think it can, through fuller connection between people, including the musician.
That's what make it special for me in the early days, hearing the musician following the vibe and trying to tweak until that special point, and feeling his way in this process. Such a special connection.
But for that is needed that the musician seeks that connection and have means in his performance to take is music higher or to change it a bit acording to his feelings. Or to play a live instrument and pass his emotion (not to simply show off).
So for me, as a live-act/ musician, the live thing is always the center of my interest.
As I played guitar all my life, I started playing it during my liveacts above my tracks, creating that extra dimension for emotion and live comunication.
It was good and enjoyable, I felt that people catched that vibe I was putting in my notes and felt the music and energy was more alive.
Nowadays I'm after live mixing. I'm bored about sequencing the track in a fixed way in my sequencer and always hear the same thing and have the same go-back go-forward working process in the sequencer.
So I created a simple live setup that became a composition setup as well.
Anyone can make something like this, even for faster twisted music, if one creates the proper setup for the goal to achieve.
In my case and style (goa and progressive) a simple midi keyboard/ controller with keys assigned to beat elements (on/off), faders assigned to synths, knobs to effects etc did the trick very well.
And know making and playing trance music is so much enjoyable and true
Just my 2 cents
Soon my first track with this setup will be released on Ektoplazm, so you can hear and judge the result
Peace

In my opinion most of artists don't use midi etc. in live act because:
1. they are to lazy to wear some hardware synth
2. they are afraid beware system crash, if they using only software instruments.
I using some hardware and some software instruments, and when I playing live act I'm ALWAYS doing before audio clips from my software instruments, but... i takin my hardware instruments. It takes a lot of time to connect this before my concert but... the fun eith tweaking all of this knobs live is nconceivable ;]
